The reactions documented so far are mixed—and the objections often concern how AI is used, what the images communicate, and whether the work raises ethical or rights concerns.
What happened with the AI manga remake?
The clearest manga example is the remake of 児童福祉司 一貫田逸子, originally created by さかたのり子 and 穂実あゆこ and published as a two-volume book in 2006. In 2024, Manga Kingdom included a color remake made with generative AI in its “Masterpiece Remake Project.” ITmedia reported that it retained the original’s panel layout and composition and continued to credit the original authors. The authors expressed positive views about the remake. (ITmedia’s report)
Reader comments in that report went in different directions. Some people were curious or praised AI as a tool. Others said the images looked clean but lacked expressive power, or that the art did not vary its emphasis from panel to panel. Those criticisms are about how the pictures function as manga—expression, pacing, and panel-to-panel emphasis—not simply the fact that AI was involved. The reported comments are examples, not a representative poll of readers.
Does an anime illustration backlash prove fans reject AI manga?
No. A separate October 2024 dispute involved an anime tribute illustration, not an AI-generated manga. The official account for the anime adaptation of ぷにるはかわいいスライム posted a commemorative illustration by manga artist すがやみつる. He later said he used DALL·E 3 to make the moon in the background while drawing the person himself. ITmedia reported that some users on X reacted angrily after the AI use became known. The artist defended limited background use and said he intended to use AI with restraint. (ITmedia’s report)

すがやみつる framed his view this way: 「生成AIについては、多くの問題が指摘されているが、この背景のような使い方なら、他の漫画家、イラストレーターにも迷惑はかけていないはず。」 The statement is his position on a particular use, not proof of general acceptance. The case helps explain why disputes can turn on degree and context: making one background element is different from generating an entire comic, though people may still disagree about whether the use is appropriate.
Why do reactions differ?
The documented cases raise several distinct questions that are easy to collapse into one argument about “AI art.” They are not a formal rating system, but they help clarify what people are responding to:

- How much of the work did AI make? A remake created with generative AI and a tribute illustration with an AI-made moon involve different scopes of use.
- Was the use disclosed? In the tribute-illustration case, the dispute followed identification of the AI-generated background.
- Did the original creators consent, and were they credited? The manga remake retained credit for its original authors, who viewed it positively, according to ITmedia.
- Does the output resemble existing characters or works? Concerns about resemblance and unauthorized imitation can arise apart from whether an image looks polished.
- Does it work as storytelling? In the manga-remake discussion, some readers focused on expression and panel emphasis—qualities that affect sequential storytelling.
Are the concerns only about image quality?
No. Commercial ethics, imitation, and rights are also part of the debate, but the relevant reports describe specific people and organizations rather than a national audience consensus.
Commercial use and artist objections
In September 2024, French manga publisher chattochatto withdrew an AI illustration after complaints from artists, clients, and X users about the ethics of selling AI-assisted work. The publisher said it had not fully understood the issues and would avoid AI illustrations and AI-involved products pending legal developments. ITmedia also condemned harassment directed at the artist. This was a dispute involving a French publisher; it should not be treated as a survey of Japanese readers. (ITmedia’s report)

Impersonation and alleged imitation
In a May 2024 interview, manga artist 樋口紀信 described an unauthorized style-LoRA made in connection with impersonation and harassment. That is his account of what happened, not a court judgment. It illustrates why some objections focus on how a system or output is connected to a particular artist’s identity and work, rather than on visual quality alone. (ITmedia interview)
A publisher’s position on resemblance and rights
On October 31, 2025, Shueisha said it would respond firmly if it judged that its works’ rights had been infringed by generative AI outputs, after raising concerns about Sora 2 videos it considered similar to existing manga and anime. The publisher called for effective measures against infringement and remedies for rightsholders. Its statement records Shueisha’s position; it does not establish that every similar output infringes. Shueisha’s statement also acknowledged the potential benefit of generative AI while rejecting a creative environment built on trampling authors’ dignity or violating people’s rights: 「生成AIの進化により、より多くの人々が創作の喜びを分かち合い、創作物を享受できるようになる社会は歓迎されるべきだが、それが、心血を注いで作品を作り上げた作家の尊厳を踏みにじり、多くの人々の権利を侵害することのうえに成立してよいはずはない」

The Agency for Cultural Affairs’ March 2024 document, “AI and Copyright,” organizes current thinking in an area where court precedents have not accumulated. The Agency says the document is nonbinding and does not make a definitive legal assessment of any particular AI or technology. It therefore does not support a blanket claim that all AI training is lawful or unlawful, or that a particular output is automatically permitted or prohibited. It is useful to distinguish questions about developing and training AI from questions about generating, publishing, or selling a particular output. A stakeholder’s criticism or a publisher’s stated view may raise important issues, but it is not itself a legal ruling about an individual work.
So are anime fans in Japan unhappy with AI-generated manga?
Some readers and creators have voiced criticism, while others in the reported manga-remake case were curious or positive, and the original authors supported the remake. The related anime-illustration dispute shows that even limited AI use can provoke objections, but it is not evidence about manga reception as a whole. The cited reporting does not establish how common opposition is among Japanese anime fans, so a national consensus or percentage would go beyond what these cases show.
