Yes—Netflix’s 2025 thriller iHostage is inspired by the February 2022 hostage crisis at the Apple Store on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein. But it is a dramatization, not a documentary: the film uses fictional character names, changes dialogue and condenses events while following the incident’s broad timeline.
What is iHostage about?
iHostage is a Dutch thriller built around an armed standoff at an Apple Store in Amsterdam. Netflix says the film portrays events from the perspectives of the perpetrator, hostages and emergency services. The streaming service announced its global premiere for April 18, 2025, and lists the film at 1 hour 42 minutes with a TV-MA rating. Netflix’s announcement and its official title page describe the film as inspired by true events.
Bobby Boermans directed the film, Simon de Waal wrote it, and Horizon Film produced it. The credited cast includes Soufiane Moussouli, Admir Šehović and Emmanuel Ohene Boafo. Netflix’s Tudum identifies their characters as Ammar Ajar, Ilian Petrov and Mingus; those are names used in the film, not a claim that they are the real participants’ names.
How closely does it follow the real standoff?
The real event that inspired the film took place in February 2022 at the Apple Store on Leidseplein. In its account of the incident and interview with Boermans, TIME reports that the hostage crisis ended after a hostage escaped while retrieving water and the suspect was struck by a police vehicle. Those details are TIME’s reporting; the film should not be treated as a record that verifies every event or its circumstances.

Boermans told TIME that the filmmakers focused on the night of the incident and followed its broad timeline, while condensing time and taking dramatic license. Netflix Tudum reports that de Waal spoke directly with police involved in the response. That production research provides context for the adaptation, but it does not make the film’s dialogue or individual scenes literal historical records.
What the film changes
| Element | What to understand |
|---|---|
| Character names | The film uses fictional names, including Ammar Ajar, Ilian Petrov, Mingus, Lynn and Kees van Zanten; these should not be mistaken for verified names of real participants. |
| Dialogue | Dialogue is changed rather than presented as a verbatim transcript. |
| Timeline | According to Boermans as reported by TIME, the story follows the broad sequence of events but condenses time. |
| Form | Netflix presents iHostage as a thriller inspired by true events, not as a documentary. |
Netflix Tudum’s explanation, “Is iHostage a True Story? What to Know About the Dutch Thriller,” is useful for distinguishing the film’s fictional roles from the real incident. Taken together with Boermans’s comments to TIME, it supports a clear description: a dramatized retelling based on a real crisis, not a scene-by-scene reconstruction.
