On January 7, 2024, it corrected that statement: AI components available in tools such as Photoshop had entered the marketing creative, although Wizards said a human did the overall work. The art came from a vendor, but Wizards accepted responsibility for ensuring its standards were met.
What happened with the Ravnica Remastered promotion?
The disputed image was marketing material associated with Ravnica Remastered. After people questioned visual inconsistencies in its background, Wizards initially denied that the image was AI-generated. Those reported visual observations prompted scrutiny; they are not, by themselves, proof of how the image was made.
On January 7, 2024, the Magic account posted a correction. Wizards said it had made a mistake in saying the image was not created using AI, explaining that components available in tools such as Photoshop had crept into the creative. The overall work, Wizards said, was done by a human. GameSpot reported the statement on January 8, 2024.
What did Wizards say about responsibility?
Wizards said the art came from a vendor, but that oversight remained its responsibility. In the statement reproduced by GameSpot, the company said: “While the art came from a vendor, it’s on us to make sure that we are living up to our promise to support the amazing human ingenuity that makes Magic great.”

Wizards also said it would update how it worked with vendors on creative outside game products, including social-media marketing images. That was the company’s stated response at the time; the available reporting does not establish which later vendor-process changes were implemented. Wargamer also covered the controversy and the Ravnica Remastered advertisement.
How does the incident relate to Wizards’ current AI-art policy?
Wizards’ Generative AI art FAQ, updated June 18, 2025, says artists, writers, and creatives contributing to Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons must refrain from using generative AI tools to create final products. The FAQ frames the policy around the human creativity behind the games; it is Wizards’ policy statement, not an independent assessment of the incident.

The FAQ describes a process for investigating concerns: gathering reports, reviewing art, rerunning tools, and contacting the artist. Wizards acknowledges that detection is difficult, and says privacy, inconclusive investigations, or internal actions may mean it does not publicly address every allegation. It also says the company is investing in a pilot with Voight.ai for a customized detection tool and emphasizes keeping a human involved. These are Wizards’ descriptions of its approach, not independent validation of a detection tool’s accuracy. Read Wizards’ Generative AI art FAQ.

The correction establishes that Wizards’ initial denial was wrong and that AI components entered the marketing creative. It does not establish that the vendor knowingly broke a policy, identify an individual responsible, or provide an independent forensic account of the exact tools and steps used. Nor do the reported visual inconsistencies alone prove AI generation.
