Netflix’s 2020 film Rose Island is based on the real attempt by Italian engineer Giorgio Rosa to establish an independent micronation on an artificial platform in the Adriatic Sea, off Rimini. Rosa declared it independent in 1968; Italy dismantled it in February 1969. The film dramatizes the episode, and at least one key part of its origin story is fictionalized.
What is Netflix’s Rose Island about?
Netflix describes the 2020 comedy as the story of an idealistic engineer who builds an island off the Italian coast and declares it a nation. The film stars Elio Germano, Matilda De Angelis and Tom Wlaschiha. Its Italian-region title page labels it based on real life; catalog details, including available audio and subtitles, can vary by market and change over time. Netflix’s title listing identifies it as a 2020 comedy. Netflix Media Center calls it a drama based on a true story and credits Sydney Sibilia as director and Grøenlandia as producer. ANSA reports that Sibilia co-wrote the film with Francesca Manieri. Netflix Media Center ANSA
Who was Giorgio Rosa, and what did he build?
Giorgio Rosa was an Italian engineer who built an artificial platform in the Adriatic Sea near Rimini. A 2024 Swedish Defence University thesis describes it as a two-floor structure measuring 400 square metres and supported by nine pylons. The thesis says Rosa declared the Republic of Rose Island independent on 1 May 1968. ANSA likewise reports that the independent state was founded in 1968. ANSA Swedish Defence University thesis (2024)
The platform’s declaration made it a self-proclaimed micronation, not a country whose independence was internationally established. The sources document Rosa’s claim and the Italian response; they do not establish that other states recognized Rose Island as sovereign.

How did Italy respond?
According to the 2024 thesis, Italian Carabinieri, police and Finance Guard personnel occupied the platform on 25 June 1968. Italy later demolished it. ANSA gives the destruction date as 11 February 1969, while the thesis gives 13 February 1969. The sources therefore support the broader account that the platform was destroyed in February 1969, but not a single uncontested exact date. ANSA Swedish Defence University thesis (2024)
What does the film change from the real story?
Rose Island is a dramatization, not a scene-by-scene historical record. Corriere della Sera specifically reports that the film fictionalizes how Rosa first conceived the island. That provides a documented example of a change; it does not establish that every scene or character detail is invented. The historical sources set out the platform’s basic chronology and physical details, but do not settle every relationship, conversation or comic sequence shown on screen. Rosa’s memoir passage reproduced by Corriere gives a sense of the political frustration associated with his project: “Non potevi far nulla che i politici non volessero, e questa schiavitù ogni giorno di più ti soffocava.” The words are in Italian; any English version should be treated as a translation, not as Rosa’s original wording. The two sources provide different dates for the same event: ANSA reports 11 February 1969, and the Swedish Defence University thesis reports 13 February 1969. The thesis is a 2024 secondary synthesis that says it draws on parliamentary records, a petition by Rosa and associates, and historical secondary sources. Because the accounts conflict, “February 1969” is the most reliable wording for a general summary; the exact date should be attributed to the source giving it rather than stated as settled fact.
