Reporting on probate documents says his 2005 will named his wife, Betsy Arakawa, as beneficiary. Arakawa died before Hackman, and the trust documents that could identify the ultimate beneficiaries have not been made public in the sources reviewed.
What Hackman’s will reportedly said
The Associated Press reported that Hackman’s will, updated in 2005, left his estate to Arakawa. Her will from the same year reportedly directed her estate to him. Those reciprocal provisions do not, by themselves, answer who receives the assets after both spouses have died.
A legal analysis of probate filings describes Hackman’s plan as including a pour-over will and two trusts: the Gene Hackman Living Trust and the GeBe Revocable Trust. It reports that the publicly described will named Arakawa as beneficiary in her role as successor trustee. The trust instruments and their full beneficiary terms are not publicly available in the sources reviewed. AP’s probate reporting and the legal analysis of the filings therefore do not establish the final recipients or how the assets will be divided.
Why the trusts matter
A will can direct assets into a trust, while the trust document sets out how trust property is held or distributed. In Hackman’s case, the legal analysis reports that Julia Peters described assets in both trusts and said the GeBe Revocable Trust passes through Hackman’s will to the Gene Hackman Living Trust. Without the controlling trust terms, the public cannot reliably determine who the ultimate beneficiaries are.

That distinction also explains why a reported will provision naming Arakawa is not proof that a particular child, charity, or other person inherits. The public sources reviewed do not identify a final beneficiary or a completed distribution.
Who is managing the estate?
AP reported that Julia Peters was managing the estate. The legal analysis says Peters petitioned on March 6, 2025, to admit Hackman’s will to probate and be appointed personal representative, and that the court approved the petition that day. It also reports that after Arakawa died before Hackman, Peters sought a temporary successor trustee; Avalon Trust, LLC was appointed to that temporary role on March 20, 2025.

These are administration roles, not evidence of inheritance. A personal representative or trustee may handle estate or trust matters without being a beneficiary.
What the public timeline establishes
- 2005: AP reported that both spouses signed wills directing their estates to one another.
- March 6, 2025: The legal analysis reports that the court approved Peters’s petition to probate Hackman’s will and appoint her personal representative.
- March 13, 2025: The legal analysis reports that Peters described assets in both trusts and the relationship between them.
- March 20, 2025: Avalon Trust, LLC was appointed temporary successor trustee, according to the legal analysis.
- April 15, 2025: Santa Fe County announced that it had provided redacted death-investigation records under a court order. The announcement concerns investigation records, not inheritance. The county’s announcement does not disclose trust beneficiaries or a final distribution.
A public petition concerning the dispute over investigation records likewise does not disclose trust terms or decide who inherits. The petition addresses that records dispute, not the estate’s final distribution.

Is Gene Hackman’s estate worth $80 million?
An approximate $80 million figure appears in the legal analysis as an estimate attributed to other publications, but an original valuation source was not identified. It should be treated as an unverified media estimate, not an established value for Hackman’s estate.
