She was shocked and disappointed, but chose to let the artist finish the neo-traditional tattoo. The incident, reported by Futurism on November 9, 2024, raises a practical question for anyone commissioning a tattoo: who made the design, and does the client know what they are agreeing to?
What happened during Vuorinen’s tattoo session?
Vuorinen, identified in the report as a 30-year-old Helsinki resident, discovered during the session that her tattoo artist had used AI to create the design. Futurism does not name the artist or include his response.
Vuorinen told the Wall Street Journal, in remarks quoted by Futurism, that the artist “was kind of proud.” She recalled being “in shock” and “so disappointed.” Although she allowed him to complete the piece, she was unhappy with the sword in the finished design. “It’s pretty,” she said, “but it doesn’t have a soul.”
What does the story say about AI-generated tattoo designs?
The report gives two other practitioners’ views, each tied to a specific example—not evidence of a shared industry position or a universal rule.

Matt Doherty: an authorship concern
New Jersey-based tattoo artist Matt Doherty called using AI “essentially cheating” and compared it to “doing sports on steroids.” That is Doherty’s opinion; the report does not survey tattoo artists or establish how widespread agreement or disagreement is.
Matthew Hatch: whether an image translates to skin
Toronto tattoo artist Matthew Hatch described a client bringing him an AI-generated image of galaxies in space. Hatch said the image would have looked like a bruise as a tattoo, adding: “There are limitations on what is possible.” His assessment concerns that particular image, not every image made with AI.

CoCreate: one reported example, not a product test
Futurism’s reporter says they tried CoCreate’s free tattoo image generator with the prompt “a red cardinal with dogwood flowers.” The resulting image included the word “imagine” beneath it, and the reporter found it less convincing and more uncanny than their own tattoo. This was an individual illustration, not a formal comparison, and the report does not establish whether the service is currently available.
What should a client ask before approving a tattoo design?
The incident does not establish a general disclosure standard, but it shows why a client may want to clarify how a proposed design was made before it is tattooed. A direct conversation can cover authorship, consent and whether the image suits the intended placement and style.

- Ask who created the design. Was it drawn by the artist, made with AI, or developed using both? If AI was involved, ask what parts of the image it produced and what the artist changed.
- Discuss what you are approving. Make sure you see and agree to the actual design that will be tattooed—not just a reference image or an earlier version.
- Talk through how it will work as a tattoo. Ask the artist to explain how the image’s details and overall appearance will be adapted for the chosen placement and style. Hatch’s example illustrates one practitioner’s concern about a specific image’s suitability; it is not a blanket technical verdict on AI-generated art.
- Pause if the answer changes your decision. Vuorinen chose to let her artist finish, but a client can raise concerns before the tattooing proceeds and discuss what to do next with the artist.
What the report does—and does not—establish
Futurism reports one client’s experience and quotes several people describing their own views or examples. It provides no survey, prevalence statistic or industry-wide disclosure rule, so it cannot show how often tattoo artists use AI or how tattoo artists generally feel about it. The quoted interviews with Vuorinen, Doherty and Hatch are attributed to the Wall Street Journal by Futurism; the underlying interviews were not separately available in the report’s account.
