That is the clearest recent date in the available coverage, but it is not an officially confirmed start: TheWrap said Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment, and an industry listing gives a conflicting July date.
When is Heat 2 expected to start filming?
TheWrap reported on September 24, 2026 that Heat 2 was due to begin shooting in November. Its July 3 report had also said filming would start that month. The studio did not confirm the schedule; in the September report, TheWrap said Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment. So November 2026 is a reported production start, not a confirmed date from the studio. TheWrap’s September 24 report and July 3 report describe the schedule.
Why do listings show different production dates?
Production List’s entry, updated October 4, 2026, labels the film “in production” and lists a July 2026 shoot date. That conflicts with TheWrap’s November schedule. The listing does not explain whether July reflects an earlier plan or a different meaning of “shoot date,” and the available reporting does not resolve the discrepancy. It also names Los Angeles, Chicago and Las Vegas as locations. Production List’s entry is an industry listing, not an official studio announcement.
With no studio confirmation in these reports, neither the listing nor the press schedule establishes that cameras have begun. The status and date remain unsettled.

What is the film adapting, and who is reported to star?
Michael Mann is directing the film, which TheWrap describes as both a sequel to his 1995 film Heat and an adaptation of the 2022 novel Heat 2, co-written by Mann and Meg Gardiner. The novel follows characters in the years around the original film, so the movie’s story has prequel elements as well as continuing the earlier story. TheWrap’s July 2026 report identifies the project’s source material and reported cast.
- TheWrap reported that Christian Bale was set to play Vincent Hanna and Leonardo DiCaprio was set to play Chris Shiherlis.
- RTÉ reported on September 29, 2026 that Stephen Graham confirmed he will play Neil McCauley. RTÉ’s report
- In its September 24 report, TheWrap said Ebon Moss-Bachrach was in final talks to play Kelso, a role played by Tom Noonan in the original. That report did not say the casting was finalized. TheWrap’s casting report
What is confirmed—and what is still unclear?
The available coverage supports a November 2026 start as the latest specific schedule reported by TheWrap, alongside an unresolved July date in Production List. It does not provide an official production-start announcement from Amazon MGM Studios or establish that filming has begun. TheWrap reported that the studio declined to comment, while RTÉ said filming was expected to begin soon. Until the studio or stronger on-record evidence confirms the schedule, the precise start date should be treated as unconfirmed.
