In the film’s opening, babysitter Corey Cunningham panics after Jeremy locks him in an attic; Corey kicks the door open, knocking the boy over a railing. Jeremy’s parents arrive as he falls. The scene’s shock comes not from a Myers attack but from an ordinary babysitting situation turning suddenly and irreversibly tragic.
What happens to Jeremy in Halloween Ends?
The film opens in 2019, a year after the events of Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills. Corey is babysitting Jeremy when the boy traps him in an attic. Corey tries to get out by kicking the door. The impact knocks Jeremy over a railing, and his parents arrive at the moment of the fall. Variety describes the death as an accidental fall; the immediate cause in the scene is Corey’s panicked action, not Michael Myers. Variety’s review discusses the opening incident.
Why the death feels so disturbing
Calling Jeremy’s death the franchise’s “most disturbing” is an interpretation, not an official ranking. The case for it rests on the scene’s particular combination of circumstances:
- It overturns the expected threat. A Halloween opening invites viewers to anticipate Michael Myers. Instead, the fatal action comes from a babysitter’s panicked attempt to escape.
- The victim is a child in an everyday setting. The babysitting arrangement makes the danger feel close to ordinary life rather than part of a planned confrontation with a killer.
- His parents witness the fall. Their arrival at the instant Jeremy goes over the railing makes the event especially painful and gives it immediate consequences.
- The accident changes the story’s direction. Jeremy’s death becomes the defining trauma in Corey’s story, shaping what follows in Halloween Ends.
SYFY WIRE’s coverage characterizes the opening as startling, but that is a critical reaction, not evidence that every viewer responds the same way. SYFY WIRE’s scene analysis considers how the opening disrupts expectations.

How Jeremy’s death fits the franchise
Halloween Ends is a direct continuation of the 1978 original’s continuity, setting aside the intervening sequel timelines. Within that story, the opening’s violence is still recognizably part of a slasher franchise, but it is not one of Michael Myers’s kills: Corey’s panicked movement causes the fatal fall. The difference matters because the film first invokes the audience’s expectation of Myers, then builds Corey’s later arc around a tragedy that begins without him.
TIME’s coverage provides context for the film’s place in the franchise and its opening. The Digital Fix also discusses the incident and its role in the plot.
Rank #2
Is it really the franchise’s most disturbing death?
There is no established canon ranking that makes Jeremy’s death the objectively most disturbing in the series. It is a defensible critical choice if “disturbing” means a death that is unexpected, involves a vulnerable victim, is witnessed by family, and becomes central to another character’s story. Someone judging by other criteria—such as the brutality of a death or its connection to Michael—could reasonably choose a different scene. Jeremy’s death stands apart because it is accidental, witnessed, and narratively consequential all at once.
