Snakes and Ladders is a nine-episode Tamil crime comedy about four school friends whose attempt to cover up an accident draws them into a chain of increasingly risky choices. Its setup takes a while to find its footing, but the unruly teenagers and comic supporting cast eventually give the series an appealing dark-comedy streak.
What is Snakes and Ladders about?
Created by Kamala Alchemis and Dhivakar Kamal, the series follows Gilly, Bala, Irai and Sandy. A robbery and a series of mishaps pull the friends into trouble, and their effort to conceal an accident compounds the danger. The story’s central tension comes from watching impulsive teenagers try to manage consequences they are not equipped to handle.
Amazon India announced the show as an Amazon Original from A Stone Bench Production, with an October 18, 2024 release on Prime Video. Its ensemble includes Naveen Chandra, Muthu Kumar, Nandaa, Srinda, Manoj Bharathiraja, Samrit Surya, Rageshwar Surya and Kumar Tharun. Amazon India’s announcement lists the creators, production company, cast and announced date.
How well does the story work?
The premise promises a fast-moving teen thriller, but the early danger can feel forced: the viewer has to accept a series of reckless decisions before the comedy and suspense settle into a rhythm. The show asks for patience with the teenagers’ impulsiveness rather than making every turn feel immediately credible.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
That uneven start is central to the mixed-positive judgment in Sruthi Ganapathy Raman’s Scroll.in review. Raman writes, “The show asks us to accept teenage impulsiveness with patience, promising a thoroughly amusing dark comedy.” Once the series leans into the absurdity of the friends’ predicament, its criminal misadventures become more amusing than its initial mechanics might suggest.
Where does the comedy come from?
The humor is not limited to the four friends. Raman highlights Irai and Raagi as adolescents pushed to show their claws, while the adult ensemble adds comic friction around them. CCTV manager Leo and gangster Rico are among the supporting characters who help turn the escalating trouble into dark comedy.

The young cast and writing do much of the work of sustaining the show once it finds that tone. Raman’s verdict is that “Once you get past the unwieldy teenagers-breaking-bad part, the show becomes quite enjoyable.” That is one critic’s assessment, not evidence of a wider critical or audience consensus.

Who is this series for?
It is best suited to viewers open to a crime story that treats teenage lawbreaking with comic exaggeration rather than strict realism. The main trade-off is its slow establishment of tension: those wanting a tightly wound thriller from the opening stretch may find the setup awkward, while viewers willing to wait for the dark-comedy side to emerge may find the ensemble and escalating mishaps rewarding.
