Neil Patrick Harris voices Deadpool in the VR game Marvel’s Deadpool VR—not in place of Ryan Reynolds in the film franchise. Reynolds answered the casting news with a mock Doogie Howser, M.D. diary video that teases the idea of losing his signature role while also promoting the game.
Why did Ryan Reynolds make fun of Neil Patrick Harris?
The joke followed the announcement of Marvel’s Deadpool VR at Summer Game Fest on June 6, 2025. Harris was announced as the voice of Deadpool in the game, which contemporary coverage identified as a Meta and Twisted Pixel project for Meta Quest 3. Follow-up coverage described it as a Meta Quest 3 and 3S game. ComicBook.com’s announcement report covered the voice role and platform at the time.
The next day, Reynolds posted a mock video titled “Ryan Over-Reacts to Marvel’s Deadpool VR.” Styled like the diary segments of his early sitcom Doogie Howser, M.D., it shows Reynolds in a white doctor’s coat writing as though someone has taken his defining role. The gag is deliberately overplayed: the video treats Harris’s game casting as a pretend personal crisis, not a real feud. ComicBook.com’s report on the video also notes its game and Quest imagery, making the clip part of the game’s promotion.
What did Reynolds say about Harris playing Deadpool?
Reynolds’s mock complaint included the line, “People who steal your signature role are the biggest buttholes of all.” In the video’s voiceover, he frames it as a lesson learned in medical school, then undercuts the jealousy by calling Harris “an amazing actor with the nurturing voice of an angel.” GamesRadar+ reported the signature-role punchline, while Us Weekly reported the fuller voiceover.

What happens in the Doogie Howser parody?
The reference is to the sitcom’s young-doctor premise and diary-style presentation. Reynolds plays the mock-serious doctor, and Robyn Lively appears in a nod to the series. Us Weekly describes an awkward almost-kiss before Reynolds breaks character; the closing title card jokes that “Neil Patrick Harris is Deadpool” and that Reynolds is “moving on gracefully.” The melodrama and abrupt break are the punchline, not evidence of an actual casting fight.
Is Neil Patrick Harris the new Deadpool?
Only in the limited sense that Harris voices Deadpool in Marvel’s Deadpool VR. The announcement and coverage describe a game voice role; they do not say Harris is replacing Reynolds as Deadpool in the films. The “new Deadpool” phrasing is the premise of Reynolds’s parody, not a change to the film casting.

What is Marvel’s Deadpool VR available on?
At announcement, coverage named Meta Quest 3; later reporting referenced Quest 3 and Quest 3S. Those reports establish the platform context at the time, but do not verify the game’s current storefront status, price, or up-to-date compatibility.
