In “Tongue Tied,” Charles’s attraction to a murder suspect complicates the Arconia investigation, while a trail from doorman Lester’s trash leads to a troubling encounter between two widows. The episode ends with a new mystery—not a confirmed killer reveal.
What happens in “Tongue Tied”?
Season 5, Episode 5, written by J.J. Philbin, returns to the double-murder investigation at the Arconia. Detective Williams examines the Velvet Room with Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, but the room has been cleaned and the crime-scene evidence is gone. Williams suggests they ask the building staff what they know.
That advice shifts the trio’s attention toward the people who work in the building—and toward a clue hidden in Lester’s trash.
Why does Charles’s encounter with Sofia complicate the case?
Charles visits Sofia Caccimelio, Nicky’s widow, ostensibly to ask about Tommy the Tongue. Their conversation turns flirtatious and becomes a sexual encounter. The timing matters: Sofia remains under suspicion, so Charles’s attraction risks clouding his judgment as he investigates her.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The episode gives no basis for treating their intimacy as proof of Sofia’s innocence or guilt. It instead puts Charles’s personal feelings in tension with his role in the investigation.
Why do the Arconia staff turn against L.E.S.T.R.?
The new robot doorman, L.E.S.T.R.—short for Logic-Engineered Secure Tenant Robot—promises residents convenience, but staff members see a threat to their jobs. Oliver tries to organize a building meeting. Tenants back the robot’s convenience, while the workers fear being replaced. The staff eventually seize L.E.S.T.R. and throw it off the roof. Paul Rudd voices the robot.

Co-creator John Hoffman told TVLine that dumping the robot off the roof midseason was a “no-brainer,” joking, “We dump him off the roof — and we kill him again.” He also described the doorman as “the central connection in your building,” framing the conflict around the human ties that can be lost when convenience takes over. What does the ending reveal?
A receipt found in Lester’s trash points Charles, Mabel, and Oliver toward an address connected to Tommy the Tongue. There, they see Sofia meeting Rainey, Lester’s widow. The image links two widows to the investigation and raises fresh questions about what they share.

It is a suspicious discovery, not a solved case: the episode does not identify a killer or establish that either woman committed a murder. The ending’s tension comes from the meeting itself and what it may mean for the investigation.
