Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins left Wizards of the Coast and joined Critical Role’s tabletop publishing division, Darrington Press, in a move announced in June 2025. Perkins became Creative Director and Crawford Game Director. Their new roles do not mean Critical Role has stopped using Dungeons & Dragons: the company’s Campaign Four announcement says the campaign uses the 2024 D&D rules.
Did Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins leave D&D?
Yes. In June 2025, after departing Wizards of the Coast, the longtime Dungeons & Dragons figures joined Darrington Press, Critical Role’s game-publishing division. Contemporary reports described the change as a move from shaping D&D at Wizards to developing games at Darrington Press.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Perkins had overseen D&D story direction and Crawford its rules. Those are the newspaper’s descriptions of their work, rather than formal titles covering every part of their Wizards careers.
What are they doing at Critical Role?
At Darrington Press, Perkins is Creative Director and Crawford is Game Director, according to GameSpot’s June 17, 2025 report. The roles put both into game development at Critical Role’s publisher, but the hiring coverage does not identify a specific upcoming game or product assigned to either of them.

Perkins told the Los Angeles Times, “What brought me out of retirement was the chance to work with Jeremy and the brilliant folks at Critical Role on things that have a lasting, positive impact on the world.” Crawford said he had spent 18 years at Wizards, was ready for a new adventure, and described working with Perkins again and returning to Southern California as “coming home.”
Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham told the Times that the two were among the biggest names the company knew of and had influenced its games. The move therefore brings experienced D&D leadership into a publisher already making its own tabletop games.

Are Crawford and Perkins working on Daggerheart?
Darrington Press was reported to be developing new game concepts and expanding existing games. GameSpot described Daggerheart as a recently released Darrington Press game, so it falls within the publisher’s broader portfolio. However, the hiring reports do not establish that Crawford or Perkins has a specific Daggerheart project, supplement, or release date.

They are credited for a design contribution, not as performers or Game Masters.
