Where to read “A Living Gratitude”
Scroll published the poem in its New Year Verse 2024 selection, curated by Yamini Krishnan. The page credits it to Aditi Rao’s collection The Fingers Remember: Poems, published by Yoda Press, and says it appears with permission. The online publication date is not evidence of when the poem was written or first appeared in print.
Rao’s website dates The Fingers Remember to 2014. Scroll’s permission line uses 2015, and some catalogue listings give a 2015 edition date, so the clearest description is that the poem is credited to the collection, which Rao’s site dates to 2014.
What happens in the poem?
The poem follows a speaker and companion carrying a backpack full of stones on a walk beside a river and among deodars. The stones stand for accumulated lives and experiences: they grind against one another, then become smooth. That physical image develops into a reflection on how people change through being together.

The poem resists the idea that a relationship must become perfectly complete or frictionless. It moves from the prospect of “leaving legs behind” to the expectation of whole jigsaws, then considers a less tidy possibility: one curve smoothing into another. Later, Urdu words, rough rocks, and a peahen guiding the walkers extend the poem’s attention to shared adjustment.
What does “A Living Gratitude” mean?
The title’s gratitude is not presented as a list of things the speaker possesses. It grows from the experience of moving through a landscape with someone else, carrying the past and adapting along the way. The poem’s images allow gratitude to include difficulty: the stones are not instantly made alike, and roughness is not simply erased.

The ending brings that idea into focus: “I am proudest of this: we have earned each other’s names.” The line can be read as a claim that intimacy is made through experience. To know and name one another here is not merely to label or possess; it is to arrive at mutual recognition through a shared history. That is a reading of the poem, rather than a documented statement of Rao’s own intent.
