Burnin’ Down the House, a documentary by Worcester filmmaker Tommy Jay Dwyer, is scheduled for two screenings at Picture Show at SouthCoast Marketplace on October 23 and 24, 2026. The film explores aging firehouses and the long-term health risks of firefighting, with interviews and access inside Massachusetts firehouses, including Fall River firefighters.
What the documentary is about
Presented in partnership with the Last Call Foundation, Burnin’ Down the House looks beyond firehouse buildings to the people working inside them. Fall River Reporter describes a film built around intimate interviews and access to Massachusetts firehouses, with attention to aging stations and the long-term occupational health risks firefighters face. Its framing question is: “Who protects those who protect us?”
Filmmaker Tommy Jay Dwyer told Fall River Reporter: “This film was never about buildings. It’s about the people inside them. It’s about firefighters who continue to show up for their communities despite the sacrifices that come with the job. I wanted to tell the real story about what the real men and women face on the front lines.”

Peer support after the Gabriel House fire
In July 2025, CBS Boston reported on Fall River firefighters coping with the response to the Gabriel House fire. Lt. Jason Burns, identified in that report as a chief peer-support firefighter for his district, described supporting colleagues from the perspective of someone who had done the work. Lt. Paul Machado spoke about checking on firefighters after immediate public attention fades. CBS Boston also reported at the time that Burns was executive director of the Last Call Foundation and that the foundation was funding first-responder PTSD research; those are dated descriptions, not confirmation of current programs.
Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon urged responders to seek help, telling CBS Boston, “Nobody is programmed to deal with this.” The report presents peer support and follow-up as part of how firefighters were processing a difficult response, not as a specific subject confirmed for the documentary.

What a separate after-action account says about Gabriel House
The July 13, 2025 Gabriel House fire is important local context, but it should not be conflated with the film’s confirmed content. Firefighter Close Calls’ October 21, 2025 summary of the department’s after-action account says 16 firefighters and one district chief were on scene in roughly four minutes, with 33 firefighters present within 15 minutes. It relays that the report cited 42 firefighters within the first 10 minutes as the NFPA standard for high-risk occupancies such as Gabriel House; that figure is attributed to the after-action account and is not a universal staffing rule for every emergency.
According to the same secondary summary, the after-action document described working sprinklers but no hallway fire doors or smoke compartmentalization, and said window air-conditioning units obstructed some exits. It relayed recommendations to pursue four-person staffing on all 10 apparatus, provide more training for fatigue and difficult rescues, add a mobile system for refilling self-contained breathing apparatus cylinders, and improve preparedness coordination with assisted-living facilities.

Firefighter Close Calls attributed this statement to Chief Jeff Bacon: “The Gabriel House Fire tested our department and our community in profound ways. This report is about learning and improving, but it’s also about recognizing the courage, professionalism, and teamwork shown by every firefighter on that scene. Lives were saved that night because of their actions.”
Staffing remains a debated issue
In contemporaneous CBS Boston coverage, the union argued that Fall River was understaffed and said most companies had three firefighters. The Massachusetts Fire Chiefs’ Association president said most departments in the state could not meet the four-person ideal, while Mayor Paul Coogan said staffing was set based on the number requested by the chief. These are positions reported during the debate, not a single uncontested finding about staffing.

Training is not a staffing count
The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services reported that 45 recruits graduated from two career recruit classes on March 6, 2026, with Fall River among the represented departments. The release describes classroom and practical training and certification to Firefighter I/II and hazardous-materials first-responder operations levels. It documents one academy cohort, not the current size or adequacy of Fall River’s department.
