Its essays, stories, interviews, poetry and visual work explore menstrual experiences through questions of stigma, dignity, literacy, culture and representation—not as one author’s argument or a comprehensive account of the region.
What kind of book is Period Matters?
The collection brings together contributors from fields including policy, art, academia, activism and entrepreneurship, alongside people whose experiences are often left out of mainstream discussion. Rather than presenting a single thesis or a region-wide survey, it puts varied forms and perspectives in conversation. The publisher describes the book as an anthology; its description and the book’s official site outline its mix of genres and contributors.
Pan Macmillan’s book page and the official Period Matters website identify Farah Ahamed as editor and list the book’s publication in 2022. The official site gives the publication date as 28 June 2022.
Which experiences and themes does the anthology explore?
Its examples connect menstruation with social conditions and cultural practices, as well as with the body. The book’s publisher synopsis describes Granaz Baloch writing about a menstrual-health workshop in Balochistan and Radha Paudel on advocacy for menstrual dignity as a human right in Nepal. These are particular contributions, not stand-ins for everyone’s experience in either place.

The official About page outlines a wider range of subjects, including Buddhist nuns in Bhutan, caste and stigma, trans experiences, disability, incarceration, class and poverty. It also describes work on menstrual literacy, period-tracking apps and biodegradable-pad innovation. Taken together, these examples show the anthology’s interest in how menstrual experiences meet questions of access, identity, social position and everyday practice.
Why is art central to the book?
Art is a substantial strand of Period Matters, not just decoration alongside the written pieces. The official site uses the term “menstrala” for art inspired by menstruation and describes work across forms including photography, painting, embroidery, murals and dance. Artists named there include Rupi Kaur, Anish Kapoor, Lyla Freechild, Shahzia Sikander and Sarah Naqvi.

Including art alongside essays, poetry, stories and interviews gives the subject more than one mode of expression. The anthology’s range makes room for personal and visual work as well as discussion of stigma, dignity and literacy; it does not establish how common any one experience or attitude is across South Asia.

Readers interested in writing and art on menstruation, cultural approaches to menstrual health, or the ways social position shapes whose experiences are heard may find the collection relevant. It is best approached as a multi-genre anthology with selected perspectives, rather than as a clinical handbook, a practical guide or a comprehensive survey of South Asia.
