Yahoo Messenger shut down on July 17, 2018, ending a service that began as Yahoo Pager in March 1998. Its closure was a milestone for people who remember desktop-era instant messaging, though reports of fans mourning its end are not evidence that every person who grew up in the 1990s used it or felt nostalgic.
When did Yahoo Messenger shut down?
Yahoo announced the closure on June 8, 2018, and users could no longer access Messenger after July 17, 2018. The service had launched as Yahoo Pager in March 1998, making its run roughly 20 years. Yahoo Entertainment reported the launch and closure dates, as did TechCrunch.
Why did Yahoo close Messenger?
Yahoo said communications were changing and that it would focus on tools it believed better suited consumer needs. In its statement, quoted in Yahoo Entertainment’s June 8, 2018 report, the company said: “As the communications landscape continues to change over, we’re focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs.”
Contemporary coverage placed the decision in the context of newer mobile messaging services overtaking desktop-era products. That context helps explain the timing, but Yahoo did not identify a single exclusive cause or publish a quantified user decline in the cited announcement. TechCrunch’s 2018 report described the mobile-messaging shift.

What happened to old Yahoo Messenger chat history?
TechCrunch and Fortune reported in 2018 that users had six months after the shutdown to download their message history. That was a temporary historical window, ending around January 2019—not a current recovery offer. The cited reports do not establish an official way to retrieve those histories today. Fortune’s report, republished by Yahoo Finance, covered the download period.
Was Squirrel a replacement for Yahoo Messenger?
Yahoo said there was no replacement for Messenger when it announced the closure. It pointed users toward Squirrel, an invite-only group-chat beta. That mention did not make Squirrel a direct or lasting successor to Messenger; it was a separate product in beta at the time. TechCrunch reported Yahoo’s guidance.

Why does the shutdown still feel nostalgic?
For former users, Messenger can stand for an earlier internet routine: signing on at a desktop, checking who was available, and chatting in a service that was part of everyday online life. The emotional pull is understandable as personal memory, not proof of a universal generational experience.
Contemporary coverage described fans mourning the end when the service closed. The Economic Times reported that reaction on July 17, 2018. It was qualitative coverage, not a representative survey: there is no verified statistic in these sources establishing how many people born in the 1990s used Messenger or felt nostalgia about it.
