What happened to Redbox?
Redbox operated a nationwide network of kiosks that rented DVDs and Blu-ray discs. By 2024, its business also included digital rentals and purchases, free on-demand programming, and free ad-supported live TV, according to CSSE’s filing for the quarter ended March 31, 2024. Redbox’s parent filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on June 29, 2024. The cases were converted to Chapter 7 effective July 10, moving them into liquidation. On July 11, the Los Angeles Times reported that the kiosk business would shut down and that CSSE planned to liquidate assets. The report put the remaining network at about 24,000 kiosks. A later creditor motion filed on October 1, 2024, said Redbox was no longer operating. That statement is evidence of the business’s status by that date, not proof that every machine stopped accepting rentals on the same day. Bankruptcy court docket

How many Redbox kiosks were there?
The figures differ because they describe the network at different times. CSSE reported approximately 27,000 kiosks in its filing for the quarter ended March 31, 2024. The bankruptcy filing and July reporting described roughly 24,000 kiosks later that year. Both are approximate counts, not a verified tally of machines still functioning on a particular date.

Why did Redbox close?
The shutdown came amid a combination of financial pressure and changes in how people watched movies. No single factor is established as the sole cause.

Debt and financing pressure
CSSE acquired Redbox in August 2022, assuming $359.9 million in debt, according to the company’s SEC filing. That filing said the combined business’s ability to service debt and operate depended in part on a partial recovery in theatrical releases, cost savings from combining operations, and financing. These were company-stated assumptions, not guarantees that the business could meet its obligations.
The Los Angeles Times reported that CSSE recorded a $636.6 million loss in 2023 and had $970 million in listed debts. Those figures are attributed to the newspaper’s account of company and bankruptcy filings. CSSE Form 10-Q Los Angeles Times, July 11, 2024

Fewer new releases and changing viewing habits
The Los Angeles Times described Redbox as struggling to adapt as viewers shifted toward streaming and digital video-on-demand. Its reporting also pointed to the availability of new releases, pandemic-era disruption, and Hollywood strikes that affected the release slate. These pressures compounded the financing and debt challenges; the available accounts do not quantify each factor’s individual contribution.
The longer-term decline in kiosk rentals was already visible before the shutdown. The Los Angeles Times, citing the Digital Entertainment Group, reported that U.S. consumer spending on kiosk rentals was $1.27 billion in 2017, about one-third lower than five years earlier. What should former Redbox customers know?
The available court records and contemporaneous reporting do not establish a uniform final policy for customers’ rentals, accounts, charges, refunds, or support. Nor do they establish a single date for every kiosk’s last successful transaction or physical removal. Avoid assuming that a particular machine’s status or a customer’s account outcome was identical nationwide.
What can replace kiosk rentals?
The best alternative depends on whether you want a physical disc or digital access to a specific title. A DVD or Blu-ray player can play discs you own, but it is not a Redbox replacement service. Streaming and digital rental services offer another route, though availability, price, and catalog vary by provider, title, and region; no one service is established here as the definitive substitute.

- For discs you own: Use a compatible DVD or Blu-ray player. This works without relying on a streaming catalog, but requires access to the disc itself and a player.
