Redbox’s June 2024 shutdown left DVD kiosks at retail locations, and removal companies began clearing them away. In reports published in November 2024 and February 2025, The Junkluggers and CoolSys described their work—but neither report establishes how many kiosks remain today or whether the nationwide cleanup is complete.
Why were Redbox kiosks left behind?
Redbox shut down in June 2024, leaving its self-service DVD machines at retail sites. In a November 19, 2024 report, Hackaday cited The Junkluggers Brand President Justin Waltz’s estimate that roughly 34,000 kiosks were still standing after the closure. That was an attributed estimate at the time, not a verified count of kiosks remaining in October 2026. Hackaday’s report described the question facing retailers: what happens to the machines and the discs inside them?
What did The Junkluggers say it did?
Waltz told Hackaday that The Junkluggers had removed thousands of kiosks nationwide. He said the company completed an initial phase at major retailers and grocery chains in less than three weeks. The report describes the company evaluating different kiosk types, recycling metal components, and seeking reuse or donation for parts.
Waltz also said recovered DVDs were being rehomed to local artists and community organizations, including assisted-living facilities, homeless shelters, and veterans’ clinics. These are company-reported practices; Hackaday did not provide an independent audit of the quantities or destinations.

What did CoolSys report?
In a February 11, 2025 announcement, refrigeration and facilities-services company CoolSys said it had removed more than 4,700 Redbox kiosks nationwide to that point. Its service for retailers included site evaluation, removal, recycling, and disposal. The announcement was a company claim, not an independently verified fleet count. CoolSys’s announcement, syndicated by Nasdaq, also described the technical work involved in dismantling the machines.
Why does kiosk removal involve more than hauling?
CoolSys said Redbox kiosks contain refrigeration systems that protect DVDs from temperature extremes. It identified safe refrigerant handling as one removal concern, alongside recycling electronics, metal, and plastic. That means taking a kiosk out of service can involve equipment and materials requiring specialist handling, rather than simply moving a cabinet to a landfill.

What is known about the cleanup—and what is not?
The reports document work by two providers at different points in time, but they do not establish a complete nationwide total:
| Provider and report date | Reported work | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|
| The Junkluggers, reported by Hackaday on November 19, 2024 | Thousands of units removed; an initial phase at major retailers and grocery chains completed in less than three weeks, according to Justin Waltz. | An attributed company representative’s account; no exact removal total or independent verification was provided. |
| CoolSys, announcement dated February 11, 2025 | More than 4,700 kiosks removed nationwide to that date, according to the company. | A dated company-reported total; no independent verification was provided. |
The two figures should not be added together: the reports do not establish whether their work overlapped. Nor do they show how many kiosks are still in place in October 2026. The available reports therefore support neither a current remaining count nor a claim that removal is finished nationwide.
