Alicent offers to help her take the city, Daemon returns to her side after a vision at Harrenhal, and armies and fleets move toward a widening war. These are launch points, not resolutions: the episode does not show whether Alicent’s plan succeeds or what becomes of the people caught in it.
What happens in the Season 2 finale?
Alicent travels secretly to Dragonstone and proposes that Rhaenyra seize King’s Landing while Aemond is away. She says Helaena will not resist. Rhaenyra makes clear that capturing the city and taking the throne would not end the conflict on its own: as long as Aegon lives, her enemies could rally around him as an alternative claimant.
Alicent accepts what Rhaenyra is asking of her. The conversation leaves them with a possible path to the capital, but the episode does not show the plan being carried out. It does not confirm that Alicent can deliver the city, that Helaena will remain uninvolved, or what happens to Aegon.
The scene’s emotional force comes from the gap between their history and their political positions. The two women once shared intimacy; now they are negotiating over a crown and the life of Alicent’s son. Finale director Geeta Vasant Patel described the dynamic to TheWrap on August 4, 2024, as “two people who love each other, who think they loved each other and they’re trying to pretend that they don’t.” That reading explains the scene’s tension, but it does not establish that their agreement will hold.

Why does Daemon bend the knee to Rhaenyra?
At Harrenhal, Daemon’s visions have been unsettling his confidence in his own ambitions. In the finale, Alys leads him to the weirwood in the godswood, where he sees images connected to the wider Ice and Fire prophecy and to the future world of Game of Thrones. The episode presents these images associatively rather than supplying a definitive explanation for every detail.
The vision changes how Daemon sees his place in the conflict. He returns to Rhaenyra and bends the knee, choosing to support her claim instead of pursuing the crown for himself. It is a turning point in his allegiance, not proof that their political or personal conflicts have vanished.

What does the closing montage mean?
The montage widens the story beyond the private bargain on Dragonstone. Forces and fleets are mobilizing, with Starks, Lannisters, the Triarchy and Hightowers among the powers in motion. The episode’s endpoint is a convergence of competing interests, not a settled outcome.
- Aegon and Larys leave King’s Landing. Their departure is a setup beat; the finale does not resolve what they will do next.
- Otto is shown imprisoned. His brief appearance establishes his situation at that moment, not what becomes of him.
- Rhaena appears to find Sheepstealer. The scene points toward a possible dragon-related development, but it does not show a completed resolution of her story.
- Armies and fleets are on the move. Their presence signals a broader war ahead, not an immediate battle shown in this episode.
What did Season 2 set up, and what can viewers say now?
When the finale aired in 2024, its immediate question was whether Rhaenyra would move on King’s Landing and whether Alicent’s offer could make that possible. Daemon’s renewed loyalty strengthened Rhaenyra’s position, while the montage showed that other powers were already moving. The episode therefore set up a campaign and a widening war rather than a peaceful transfer of power.

That is the Season 2 setup, not a current-season cliffhanger. As of October 5, 2026, Season 3 had aired. HBO’s 2026 schedule listed eight episodes, running from June 21 through August 9, and named HBO and HBO Max as viewing destinations. The Season 2 finale’s unanswered questions should not be presented as predictions about a season that is still forthcoming.

The book is framed as an account assembled by historians, with competing versions of events; the show dramatizes events directly and can add, reorder or fill in material.

In particular, Patel confirmed to TheWrap on August 4, 2024, that the two private Rhaenyra–Alicent meetings in Season 2 were created for the television series and do not appear in the source book. Their bargain is therefore screen-specific material, not a scene whose outcome can be treated as settled by the book’s chronology. Fire & Blood can illuminate the larger conflict, but it cannot by itself prove that the adaptation will follow the same sequence or causality.
