Naked Acts is a 1996 feature written and directed by Bridgett M. Davis. Its central conflict is direct: Cicely, a young Black actress who has recently lost 57 pounds, wins her first film role, then discovers it requires a nude scene she does not want to perform. The film follows her effort to keep the part without surrendering control over her own body.

What is Naked Acts about?

Cicely hopes her first role in a low-budget art film will be a breakthrough. Instead, the job’s demand for nudity confronts her with a choice between professional opportunity and her own boundaries. The question at the heart of the story is how she can keep her clothes on and keep her part.

The 57-pound weight loss belongs to Cicely’s fictional backstory; it is not a real-world statistic about the film or its production. The Museum of Modern Art lists the feature’s runtime as 87 minutes.

Why does the film connect one actress’s experience to Black film history?

Davis has said that the film grew out of conversations she and her friends had as young Black women in the 1990s, including concerns about representation and the negative portrayals of Black women in popular culture. She also wanted to address sexual abuse and assault, which she viewed as intertwined with representation. In her account, the story’s conflict cannot be separated from the history of how Black actresses have been sexualized on screen.

That context makes Cicely’s demand for agency more than a personal career dilemma: it raises questions about who gets to define a role and what an actress is expected to disclose or endure to play it. This is Davis’s stated artistic framing, rather than a claim that every Black actress has the same experience.

What does the title mean?

Davis has described Naked Acts as a title with several meanings. “Acts” can refer to the phases of self-revelation, the acts of a play, and the acting profession itself. “Naked” points not only to the demanded scene but also to disclosure: the pressure on performers to reveal themselves while resisting being reduced to a type.

Clothing and wigs also matter to how Cicely presents different versions of herself. Davis’s concern, as she expressed it in a 2024 Kino Lorber press kit, is that actors need room to reveal themselves without being pigeonholed and to feel safe enough to be complete selves. She sees particular challenges for Black actresses in achieving that safety.

How did Davis make the film?

MoMA says Naked Acts was shot over three months in 1994. Davis has described inviting actors to give feedback during production; she credits Jake-ann Jones with helping shape Cicely collaboratively. That account offers a useful counterpoint to the film’s story about an actress being asked to accept terms set by others: Davis says the character herself was developed with input from the actor playing her.

MoMA describes the film as the first feature written, produced, directed, and theatrically self-distributed by an African American woman. Milestone Films says Davis initially self-distributed because she could not find a receptive distributor. MoMA also records the film’s inclusion in S. Torriano Berry’s 2001 anthology The 50 Most Influential Black Films.

How has the film been received and rediscovered?

The film later received a 4K restoration and renewed distribution. In a 2024 review, Richard Brody of The New Yorker interpreted it as a symbolically layered work focused on Black actresses and the histories of Black cinema. That is one critic’s reading, not a neutral description of the film’s plot.

Davis has also connected present-day readings of the story to #MeToo and to the longer history of pressure on actresses. This, too, is her perspective on the film’s continuing relevance.
