Florence + the Machine’s sixth album, Everybody Scream, was released on 31 October 2025. In interviews around its release, Florence Welch discussed how personal loss and recovery shaped her return to work, the sexist expectations women face in music, and her collaboration with Taylor Swift on “Florida!!!” The album’s 12 tracks bring those subjects into a work concerned with grief, mortality, mysticism, and ambition.
What Welch said about Everybody Scream
Welch spoke about the album in a live Rolling Stone conversation at New York’s Cherry Lane Theatre. The episode was published on 31 October 2025 and runs 34 minutes, according to its Apple Podcasts listing. A separate interview with The Guardian, published on 27 September 2025 and updated two days later, explored the experiences and ideas behind the record.
Everybody Scream is Florence + the Machine’s sixth album. Rolling Stone names Aaron Dessner, Mark Bowen, Mitski, and James Ford among its collaborators; those album-level credits do not establish that each contributor worked on every track. The Associated Press describes it as a 12-track album, with themes of ambition and the limits Welch sees women artists facing. (Rolling Stone Australia; Associated Press)
Loss, mortality, mysticism, and witchcraft run through the album’s subject matter. The AP reads “One of the Greats” as a challenge to sexism and male entitlement, while The Guardian likewise describes it as an indictment of double standards. Welch’s own account adds a personal dimension to those themes without making the record simply a diary or a clinical account of illness.

How personal loss and recovery informed the album
In The Guardian interview, Welch described experiencing a miscarriage in August 2023 and then learning that the pregnancy was ectopic. A ruptured fallopian tube caused severe internal bleeding, and she required emergency surgery. She connected the grief and recovery that followed with anger at feeling unsupported by the music industry, and with her eventual return to work.
Welch described that return as a source of small points of hope: “But working again helped me. It was like little lanterns in a fog.” The album’s engagement with loss and mortality can be understood alongside what she shared about that period, while leaving room for its broader artistic concerns. Welch’s criticism of sexism in music
Welch’s comments about sexism are personal observations, not a statistical account of the whole music industry. She has spoken about how women’s flamboyant self-presentation was once dismissed as contrived or attention-seeking, while imaginative personas are more accepted in contemporary pop. She also described frustration with the support she felt was lacking after her medical crisis.
“One of the Greats” makes the album’s argument about gender especially explicit. Welch told The Guardian that one lyric is: “It must be nice to be a man and make boring music just because you can.” The AP’s reading of the song as a critique of male entitlement offers a parallel interpretation, but the lyric is Welch’s pointed expression of her view rather than a measured claim about every artist or listener.

What Taylor Swift and Welch worked on together
Welch co-wrote “Florida!!!” with Swift for Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department. According to The Guardian, Swift contacted Welch by text about joining the song. Welch later performed it with Swift on the Eras Tour in 2024; the interview describes her response to appearing on the stadium stage as exhilarated.
The collaboration links Welch’s work with Swift to a specific song and performance, rather than suggesting that Swift contributed to Everybody Scream. The available reporting establishes their songwriting and live appearance together, while the album collaborators named by Rolling Stone are separate credits.

Why the interviews matter alongside the album
Taken together, the interviews show Welch discussing the album from two angles: as a work shaped by grief, physical recovery, and a return to music, and as a critique of the expectations placed on women artists. Her conversation about Swift adds a distinct account of collaboration and the scale of performing “Florida!!!” on tour. These are related parts of Welch’s public story, but they are not interchangeable: the album’s themes, her testimony about sexism, and her work with Swift each have their own context.
