Spotify’s Offline Backup can keep music playing when your connection drops, even if you forgot to download a playlist. It builds a personal playlist from queued and recently streamed tracks already cached on your phone. That makes it a useful fallback—not a guarantee that a particular song, playlist, or your whole library will be available offline.
What Spotify Offline Backup does
Offline Backup is a Spotify Premium feature for mobile phones. Spotify also lists support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It draws on queued and recently streamed tracks stored in the device’s cache, then groups available tracks into a playlist unique to you. The playlist can change as you continue listening. It does not fetch arbitrary music while you are offline.
Spotify announced the feature on October 3, 2024, describing it as a way to keep listening when a connection disappears. Its current Offline Backup support page covers mobile phones, Android Auto, and CarPlay.
How to prepare and find the playlist
Before you lose your connection
- Enable Offline listening: In Spotify, open Settings and Privacy and turn on Offline listening.
- Keep listening while online: The feature needs cached tracks to build from, so listen to music in Spotify before you go offline.
- Keep the app current: Spotify’s launch instructions said to use the latest app version and to have listened to more than five songs recently. That five-song figure was launch-era guidance; current support instead advises using Spotify and listening for a while if the playlist is missing.
When you are offline
Open Home and look for Offline Backup, or search for “Offline Backup,” then tap play. You can save the playlist to Your Library for easier access. On mobile, Spotify lets you filter by mood or genre and sort by title, artist, album, frequently played, or recommended.

Offline Backup and regular downloads are different
Offline Backup assembles a selection from listening that is already cached. Regular downloads are content you deliberately choose to save before a trip. Spotify’s US Premium offline-download information says Premium listeners can download albums, playlists, and audiobooks; Free users can download podcasts, but not music. Spotify says downloaded items play automatically after a connection is lost, and Offline Mode can restrict playback to saved content.

Spotify’s current US Premium page lists a limit of 10,000 downloaded tracks per device across up to five devices and recommends at least 1 GB of free space. Those figures apply to conventional downloads, not to the Offline Backup playlist.

Why Offline Backup may not appear
Spotify Support identifies several possible causes: not enough recent listening, insufficient free device storage, cleared cache content, or a reinstalled Spotify app. If the playlist is missing, work through these checks:
- Confirm Offline listening is enabled in Settings and Privacy.
- If possible, reconnect to the internet and update Spotify.
- Listen to some tracks while online so Spotify has cached content to use.
- Check that the device has free storage and that the app’s cache has not been cleared.
These checks cannot restore cache that has already been removed, but they can help rebuild the conditions Offline Backup needs.

Using Offline Backup in a car
Spotify says Offline Backup appears on the Spotify Home screen in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay when the device is offline. If you saved it to Your Library, you can also find it under Playlists and Downloaded while online. The car display does not offer all of the mobile controls: the order chosen on the phone carries over, and mobile filters apply when playing through Android Auto. Filtering is not available through Apple CarPlay.

Use Offline Backup as a safety net for an unexpected dead zone or a forgotten download. If you need a specific playlist or album on a flight or other trip, download that content in advance; the backup playlist is based on what Spotify has cached, not on what you might want to hear later. Spotify’s launch announcement framed the goal as “a seamless listening experience for users, no matter where they are or how they choose to listen.”
