Serena Williams said GLP-1 medication helped her lose 31 pounds after having children, alongside healthy eating and exercise she was already doing. That is her reported personal experience—not a typical-result estimate or a promise about what the medication can do for someone else.
What Williams said about losing 31 pounds
In an account reported by ABC7 on August 22, 2025, Williams said medication helped her lose 31 pounds after having children. She described it as supporting, rather than replacing, her existing habits: “GLP-1 helped me enhance everything that I was already doing, eating healthy and working out.”
Williams also pushed back on the idea that taking medication is a shortcut: “They say GLP-1s for weight loss is a shortcut; it’s not. It’s science after kids. It’s the medicine my body needed.” Those are statements about her own experience, not evidence that another person will lose the same amount or respond in the same way. ABC7’s report also quotes her saying, “I feel like you should love yourself at any size and any look.”
Which medication did Serena Williams take?
ABC7’s account of Williams’s original disclosure identifies the treatment as a GLP-1 medication, without naming a brand. A later Healthline report published August 25, 2025 names Zepbound, whose active ingredient is tirzepatide. Healthline reported that Williams began a GLP-1 medication in summer 2024, stopped, and later received Zepbound through Ro. The brand identification and timeline are Healthline’s reporting, not details established in ABC7’s original account.

What Ro’s relationship was
ABC7 reported that Williams turned to telehealth company Ro for GLP-1 injections after she had finished breastfeeding. Healthline described a sponsored post and a paid partnership between Williams and Ro. It also reported that her husband, Alexis Ohanian, is a Ro investor and board member. These commercial connections are relevant context for coverage of her account; they do not by themselves establish whether a treatment is medically appropriate for anyone else.
What Zepbound is approved for—and its risks
The FDA-approved prescribing information identifies Zepbound as a prescription treatment used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to reduce excess body weight and maintain weight reduction long term in adults with obesity, or adults with overweight and at least one weight-related condition. The FDA’s 2023 approval announcement describes the same general use alongside diet and increased activity.
Zepbound is not suitable for everyone. Its prescribing information has a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors observed in rats; whether the drug causes these tumors in humans is unknown. It is contraindicated for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. Common adverse reactions listed on the label include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain and fatigue. This is selective safety context, not a substitute for the full prescribing information or advice from a clinician.

Why a celebrity result is not a forecast
Williams’s 31-pound loss is an attributed individual result, not a clinical-trial average. Her account does not tell readers what outcome to expect, whether they meet Zepbound’s labeled criteria, or how its risks and potential benefits would apply to them. Weight-loss medication decisions require individual medical assessment rather than comparison with a celebrity testimonial.

That distinction matters in sponsored coverage. In a September 9, 2025 warning letter, the FDA said a promotional communication concerning Zepbound and Mounjaro created a misleading impression about safety and effectiveness. The agency’s warning is a reminder that discussion of an endorsement should not leave out eligibility limits or material risks.
