You can add a song excerpt to your Instagram profile from the mobile app’s profile editor. Open your profile, tap Edit profile, find the music control, choose a track from Instagram’s library, and save. The song does not autoplay: visitors tap it to listen. Instagram introduced the feature on August 22, 2024, with launch coverage describing excerpts of up to 30 seconds.

TechCrunch’s August 22, 2024 launch report says users could select a passage of up to 30 seconds. The option to choose or adjust an excerpt may depend on the controls shown in your app. TechCrunch’s launch coverage describes the original feature.
How visitors hear your profile song
The track is a profile detail, not an autoplaying soundtrack: a visitor has to tap the song to hear it. This is the key difference behind the Myspace-era comparison. iDownloadBlog’s July 14, 2026 guide also describes tap-to-play behavior.

How to change or remove the song
Return to your profile, tap Edit profile, and open the same music setting. Choose a replacement track to change the selection, or use the removal control if it is shown. The precise label and location can differ between app versions. TechCrunch’s launch report and iDownloadBlog’s guide describe changing or removing a profile song.

If the setting is missing, check the profile editor for alternate labels such as Banner or Banners, and make sure the app is up to date. Access may vary with regional availability, account, app version, rollout, or licensing, but the sources available do not establish a definitive country-by-country or account-type eligibility list. Check the editor in your own app rather than assuming a particular cause. iTechGuides’ August 18, 2026 guide lists these factors as possible explanations, not a diagnosis for an individual account.
If the control is available but a particular recording does not appear, that may reflect catalog or rights availability. It does not establish that the song is unavailable to every Instagram user. Instagram’s profile song also uses a library selection; it is separate from adding music to a Story, Reel, Note, photo, or carousel. Meta’s August 2023 announcement covered music for feed photos and carousels, not the later profile feature: Meta’s announcement about music in feed posts.

What “relive your Myspace days” means
The nostalgia is about using a song as a personal signal on a social profile—not about identical features or playback. Instagram’s launch coverage contrasted its tap-to-play profile song with the autoplaying Myspace behavior remembered from that era. That report does not establish how Myspace music works today.
Myspace’s current help page describes a Portfolio for profile content, including songs, albums, mixes, videos, photos, and GIFs. It documents a capacity of up to one large item and 30 smaller items, but does not say that music currently autoplays. Myspace Help Center: Manage your Portfolio.
