Gijs’s Acid Machine pairs a synthesizer with a circular display whose rotating lines indicate the note being played. In Make’s October 14, 2008 feature, C is the reference point: the lines in the middle circle stand still for C, while other notes appear in 12 steps around it.

How does the rotating visualizer show which note is playing?

The feature describes two actions working together: an LED blinks at the frequency of the sound, while the image rotates at a set speed. The circle’s lines provide the visible note display. Make attributes the description to “Acid Machine,” without identifying the speaker by personal name or role.

For its example, the article says the middle circle’s lines stand still when the instrument plays C. Other notes are represented outward in 12 steps. The account explains the basic idea, but does not specify a rotation rate or provide enough detail to derive a complete tuning or calibration scheme. Read the Make feature.

What is the 2008 Acid Machine?

It is a synthesizer project featured by Make on October 14, 2008, with a rotating visualizer intended to show the note being played. The feature is a brief project description rather than a complete construction guide: its indexed text does not provide a full parts list, LED specification, circuit diagram, or step-by-step reconstruction instructions.

No. Several unrelated synth products use similar names. Their identities and formats differ:

Acid Machine (2008 Make feature) A synthesizer project with a rotating note visualizer.
DOTEC-AUDIO DeeACID An iPhone and iPad acid-bass synthesizer app. Apple App Store listing.
TT-303 Acid Machine A browser-based TB-303 recreation. TimTechlor user guide.
acid8 MKII Hardware from Twisted Electrons. Product page.

These are useful distinctions when searching for the 2008 visualizer project; the shared wording does not make them versions of that project.

What is known—and not known—about rebuilding it?

The feature supports only a general component-level takeaway: the described visualizer uses an LED that blinks at the sound frequency. It does not establish the LED type, voltage, current, quantity, circuit design, optical or mechanical arrangement, or exact rotation rate. Those details should not be inferred from the short explanation; it is not enough on its own to reproduce the build reliably.
