Good Bones: New Beginnings largely kept Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E. Laine’s reported rift off-screen: Mina’s premiere story focused on her Indiana lake house, while Karen’s later episodes followed a separate Wilmington renovation. The premiere did not feature Karen or address the tension, according to TV Insider’s August 14, 2024 recap.
What viewers saw in the premiere
The August 14, 2024 premiere of the limited series followed Mina renovating a lake house in Indiana. Karen did not appear, and TV Insider reported that the episode did not discuss the tension between mother and daughter. The show therefore opened with Mina’s project rather than a joint renovation or an on-screen conversation about their relationship.
How the series separated their renovation stories
Good Bones had centered on the pair’s Indianapolis renovation work during its eight-season run from 2016 to 2023. New Beginnings took a different approach: Mina’s Indiana lake-house project and Karen’s Wilmington, North Carolina renovation were presented as separate stories. Karen’s project featured in episodes reported to have aired August 21 and 28, 2024; Mina did not appear in Karen’s storyline, according to Realtor.com’s coverage of Karen’s project.
This format showed each woman pursuing her own renovation work. It did not establish that the series was staging a confrontation or documenting a reconciliation.

What Mina and Karen had said about the relationship
Mina’s account of the strain
In 2023, as the original series was ending, Mina publicly described a strained relationship with her mother and said they had not been speaking. Realtor.com quoted her as saying, “We do not talk. We haven’t in a long time.” Coverage also reported Mina’s view that filming and working together had contributed to difficult dynamics. Those are Mina’s attributed comments, not an independently established account of every cause of the conflict.
Karen’s comments during the 2024 series
Karen’s reported comments in her 2024 episode focused on retirement and pursuing her own activities. She said, “I’ve been doing everything I want to do,” as quoted by Realtor.com. The same coverage said she did not discuss the rift in the episode. She had stepped back from Two Chicks and a Hammer in 2019 while continuing to appear on the original series.

The reported relationship update in 2026
A January 13, 2026 report by Agooka News said Mina later described the relationship as “amicable.” The report supplies that characterization but does not establish the family’s status as of October 2026 or explain what changed. It is best understood as a dated update attributed to Mina through that report, not confirmation of their present relationship.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the show did—and did not—tell viewers
- On screen: the limited series followed separate renovation projects, and the premiere did not address the reported tension.
- In public comments: Mina described a period of estrangement; Karen’s reported episode remarks centered on her retirement and projects rather than the rift.
- Not established: the private causes of the conflict, a show-filmed reconciliation, or the relationship’s current status.
The available episode coverage supports a clear conclusion about the series’ editorial choice: it built New Beginnings around independent projects rather than making the mother-daughter rift a premiere storyline.
