The 82nd Golden Globe Awards took place on January 5, 2025, so “who will win” is now a question with an official answer. The Brutalist won best motion picture – drama, Emilia Pérez won best motion picture – musical or comedy, and FX’s Shōgun led the television winners. “Who should win,” by contrast, remains a matter of critical judgment. The original predictions and preferences behind this title are not available, so the results below are separated from an independent assessment of the contenders.

What the 2025 Golden Globes results tell us

The ceremony was the 82nd Golden Globes. The awards body announced nominees across 27 categories on December 9, 2024, and said KPMG tabulated the votes. Its official winners announcement, dated January 6, 2025, records the completed results. The nominees announcement and the winners list are the authoritative records for nominations and outcomes.

Those records settle who won; they do not identify what an earlier, unavailable predictions article forecast or whom its author believed should win. It would be misleading to claim that a specific prediction proved accurate without those picks. The “should win” selections below are therefore editorial choices, not official judgments.

Film: who won and who should have won

Category 2025 winner Independent “should win” pick
Motion picture – drama The Brutalist The Brutalist
Motion picture – musical or comedy Emilia Pérez Emilia Pérez
Motion picture – animated Flow Flow
Motion picture – non-English language Emilia Pérez I’m Still Here
Female actor – drama Fernanda Torres, I’m Still Here Fernanda Torres, I’m Still Here
Male actor – drama Adrien Brody, The Brutalist Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
Female actor – musical or comedy Demi Moore, The Substance Demi Moore, The Substance
Male actor – musical or comedy Sebastian Stan, A Different Man Sebastian Stan, A Different Man
Supporting female actor Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez
Supporting male actor Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain
Director – motion picture Brady Corbet, The Brutalist Brady Corbet, The Brutalist
Screenplay – motion picture Peter Straughan, Conclave Peter Straughan, Conclave

Best picture and animated film

The Brutalist is the drama winner and a strong choice for the category: its ambition is inseparable from its portrayal of an artist shaping a life and body of work under pressure. Brady Corbet’s directing win follows that same achievement. In musical or comedy, Emilia Pérez took the picture award and also won the non-English-language category. Its musical form and cross-genre storytelling make it a defensible winner in the former; the latter is a closer call, where I’m Still Here is my preference for its focused dramatic force. Flow is my pick as well as the winner for animated film, a category where visual storytelling is central rather than incidental.

Performances and writing

Fernanda Torres’s win for I’m Still Here is also my choice for dramatic lead performance: the award recognizes the film’s emotional center without reducing it to spectacle. Adrien Brody’s work in The Brutalist similarly anchors a demanding drama. For musical or comedy, Demi Moore’s The Substance performance and Sebastian Stan’s work in A Different Man both make the winners compelling choices in categories that can accommodate sharply different tones.

Zoe Saldaña won supporting female actor for Emilia Pérez, and Kieran Culkin won supporting male actor for A Real Pain; I would choose both. The screenplay award went to Peter Straughan for Conclave, a fitting distinction for a tightly structured story driven by argument, maneuvering, and revelation.

Television: the leading winners

Category or result 2025 winner
Television series – drama Shōgun
Television series – musical or comedy Hacks
Limited series, anthology series or motion picture made for television Baby Reindeer
Female actor – drama series Anna Sawai, Shōgun
Male actor – drama series Hiroyuki Sanada, Shōgun
Female actor – musical or comedy series Jean Smart, Hacks
Male actor – musical or comedy series Jeremy Allen White, The Bear
Female actor – limited series, anthology series or television film Jodie Foster, True Detective: Night Country
Male actor – limited series, anthology series or television film Colin Farrell, The Penguin

Shōgun led television with four wins. Baby Reindeer and Hacks each received two. Those totals describe award outcomes, not a ranking of artistic merit across formats: the winners were selected in distinct series and performance categories. For the complete list of category results, see the official winners announcement.

Which film received the box office award?

Wicked won the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. That is a separate recognition from the principal picture categories, and it should not be read as a substitute for the drama or musical-or-comedy award. The official list also includes title-level award context for Conclave, Emilia Pérez, Anora, and Wicked.

How to read a prediction against a winner

A prediction and a “should win” choice answer different questions. A prediction is a forecast about the voters’ decision; a preference is an argument about artistic merit. The official records establish nominees and winners, but they do not supply critical rankings or an individual’s forecast. Without the original picks, no honest accuracy score is possible. The selections here are explicitly retrospective preferences, considered separately from the results.
