Laine, became strained amid family and work pressures around the final seasons of Good Bones. The original series ended in 2023, and their 2024 return gave them separate renovation projects. A report in 2026 described the two as speaking and amicable after spending the holidays together, but Mina said rebuilding closeness takes time. Their private disagreements and the relationship’s full current state have not been publicly established.
What Mina has said about the strain
In 2023, Mina said on her podcast Mina AF that she and Karen were not in a good place. She also described strained relationships with her brothers, Tad and William. Later, discussing the show’s final seasons, Mina said she and her mother had been in some of the most challenging places in their relationship. These are Mina’s descriptions of her experience; public accounts do not establish every private disagreement or a single definitive cause. People and TV Insider reported her comments.
Mina also characterized the last two seasons as “really hard emotionally and mentally, financially and physically.” She connected the pressure of renovation risks and financial responsibility with the difficulty of continuing the show’s established format. That helps explain why the work became hard for her, but it does not prove that the production pressures alone caused the family rift. TV Insider reported her account.
Why Good Bones ended and what followed
Good Bones concluded its original eight-season run in 2023. In 2024, HGTV announced a limited spinoff, Good Bones: New Beginnings, that brought Mina and Karen back on screen with separate projects: Mina worked on a lake house near Indianapolis, while Karen renovated a bungalow in Wilmington, North Carolina. The different locations and projects meant this was not the same shared renovation setup as the original series. HGTV’s announcement described the spinoff and projects.

Mina said she missed the fun and best parts of the original show, but not its pressure. The separate-project format was part of the 2024 return; the available reporting does not establish that it was a public explanation of the private conflict.
Karen’s role after leaving the renovation business
Karen stepped away from the Two Chicks and a Hammer renovation business in 2019. That did not mean she stopped appearing on television: she returned for Good Bones: New Beginnings. In her 2024 episode, she said she was doing landscaping, legal work and helping care for her grandchildren alongside the Wilmington renovation. TV Insider reported on her comments and activities.

Are Mina and Karen speaking now?
The latest relationship update in the cited reporting is from 2026. Mina told People that she and Karen had spent the holidays together and were amicable. She added that they were not “best friends that braid each other’s hair on Saturday nights,” and said repairing the relationship takes time. This indicates renewed contact and a more cordial period, not a confirmed full reconciliation. The report does not establish what has happened since that gathering. TV Insider reported Mina’s comments.
