Dua Lipa hosted and performed as musical guest on Saturday Night Live on May 4, 2024, in Season 49, Episode 18. The episode paired two musical performances with sketches that gave her room to play a range of comic characters; contemporary reviewers were more divided about the writing than about her willingness to commit.

Among those, several premises stood out in the contemporary recaps. The cold open sent parents into a discussion of campus protests, with Kenan Thompson playing a father whose position shifted when his own daughter was involved. That political joke is part of the sketch’s setup, rather than a neutral account of the protests.
“The Anomalous Man”
Lipa played opposite Sarah Sherman in a black-and-white, Victorian-era body-horror romance parody. The theatrical figure at its center suggests an Elephant Man-like character, but the reveal pivots to secret sexting and infidelity. Christina Izzo of The A.V. Club named it the night’s best sketch; that is her critical judgment, not a show-wide consensus.

“Sonny Angel”
In this first-date sketch, Lipa’s character’s attachment to collectible Sonny Angel figures becomes the focus. The figures are a detail in the comedy, not an indication that Lipa endorses the product or that it is currently available from any particular retailer.
“Jingle Pitch 2”
Lipa joined Bowen Yang and fictional group Soul Booth in a pitch for a local flooring-company jingle. Izzo saw promise in the sketch, while her overall assessment of the episode’s writing was more critical.

Weekend Update cameo
Jerry Seinfeld appeared as “A Man Who Did Too Much Press,” a bit The A.V. Club singled out; The Guardian also discussed the cameo. It was a guest appearance within Weekend Update, separate from Lipa’s hosting and musical duties.
How did Dua Lipa handle hosting and performing?
The episode’s central appeal was the contrast between the two jobs: Lipa had to carry the show as host and deliver the music performances. The Guardian identifies “Illusion” as the first of the two musical performances. Its reviewer, Zach Vasquez, described Lipa as effective as a comedic actor while finding much of the writing unsuccessful. Izzo likewise praised particular sketches but criticized the writing overall. These are individual reviews, not a single agreed verdict.

In her monologue, Lipa joked about doing every job at once. As quoted in The A.V. Club’s recap, she said: “I’m here, I’m hosting, I’m performing, I’m making the wigs, I’m dealing Adderall to the writers…I’m going to give you everything!” The line works as a comic exaggeration of the episode’s double-duty premise, not a factual description of the production.
