How their family history informs the label
Hanks is the daughter of Tom Hanks and Susan Dillingham, who acted under the name Samantha Lewes. PEOPLE reports that Tom Hanks and Wilson met on the set of Bosom Buddies in 1981, while he was still married to Dillingham; he and Dillingham divorced in 1985, and he began dating Wilson in 1986. Tom Hanks and Wilson married in April 1988 and later had sons Chester, known as Chet, and Truman.
Hanks also described her closeness to her younger brothers in the PEOPLE interview: “I don’t think I’ve ever really referred to them as my half brothers, which I guess they technically are,” she said, adding that “neither of them remember a time when I didn’t live with them” and “we’re a posse.” Her language reflects the family relationships as she experienced them growing up.

The interview accompanied the April 8, 2025 release of The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road. Hanks’s book follows a six-month drive along Interstate 10 from Los Angeles to Palatka, Florida, as she explores her family history. Simon & Schuster’s official book page describes a solo cross-country journey along the Ten through the American Southwest, retracing a route associated with her late mother and drawing on diaries and recollections. The memoir offers wider context about Hanks’s family and road trip; it is not solely about Wilson.
A report by the San Francisco Chronicle, published April 9, 2025, also discusses the memoir and Hanks’s account of her childhood. In describing her mother’s health, the article notes that Dillingham was never formally diagnosed with the condition Hanks considered a possibility. That personal interpretation should not be presented as a confirmed diagnosis.
