Several women have publicly accused author Neil Gaiman of sexual misconduct, including assault, coercion or unwanted conduct. Their accounts, reported from 2024 onward, differ in their details. Gaiman has denied engaging in non-consensual sexual activity. U.S. civil cases connected to Scarlett Pavlovich’s allegations were dismissed or dropped on grounds about where the disputes should be heard; those rulings did not decide whether the alleged conduct occurred.
How the allegations became public
Tortoise Media’s 2024 reporting
Tortoise Media’s podcast series Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman reported allegations by women, including former partners. It brought the claims into public reporting; the allegations were not findings by a court.
New York Magazine’s January 2025 investigation
On January 13, 2025, New York Magazine published an investigation reporting accounts from eight women. Four had also been included in Tortoise Media’s earlier reporting, according to contemporaneous coverage. The accounts varied, and the number refers to women whose accounts the magazine reported—not to a count of proven cases.
Scarlett Pavlovich identified herself in the magazine’s reporting. Her account concerned alleged events while she worked for Gaiman and Amanda Palmer’s family in New Zealand. Pavlovich later brought U.S. civil actions related to her allegations. Claims in an interview or court filing remain allegations unless established through a relevant legal finding.

What the women alleged—and what that wording means
The reporting described allegations of sexual misconduct, including assault, coercion and unwanted conduct. Those are broad descriptions of claims made in different accounts, not a statement that every woman described the same acts or circumstances. The available reporting summary does not support treating the accounts as one uniform allegation.
It is important to keep the source and status of each claim clear: the magazine reported women’s accounts, while Pavlovich’s civil filings set out claims made in litigation. Neither reporting nor filing, by itself, proves that an alleged event occurred.

Gaiman’s response
In a statement published on his website on January 14, 2025, Gaiman wrote: “I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.” He said some reported moments were familiar to him, while other descriptions did not match his recollection, and rejected the characterization that he had abused anyone. This states his position; it is not an independent determination of the allegations.
In February 2026, The Guardian reported that Gaiman again called the allegations untrue and described them as a “smear campaign.” That characterization is his, not a court’s finding.

What happened in the U.S. civil cases
The cases related to Pavlovich’s allegations were resolved on procedural grounds concerning the appropriate forum, not on whether the alleged conduct happened. The procedural distinction matters: a ruling about where a dispute should proceed is not a decision that either proves the allegations or clears the accused of them.
Dismissals and forum rulings
The Associated Press reported on February 9, 2026, that three U.S. civil actions associated with Pavlovich’s claims had been dismissed or dropped. The remaining federal actions were directed to New Zealand as the appropriate forum for disputes concerning alleged events there.

On June 29, 2026, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit affirmed dismissal of Pavlovich’s Wisconsin action on forum grounds. The appeal addressed where the case should proceed, not the truth of the allegations.
A reported argument about a police investigation
The Associated Press said Gaiman’s attorneys argued in a motion that New Zealand police investigated Pavlovich’s allegations and found them meritless. That is an assertion attributed to the defendants’ legal argument; it should not be presented as a direct police finding. The sources cited here do not include a direct New Zealand Police statement confirming that characterization.

Documented professional consequence
Dark Horse Comics said in January 2025 that it would no longer publish Gaiman’s works and confirmed cancellation of the Anansi Boys comic series and collected volume. This is a documented publishing decision, but it does not establish the truth of the allegations or determine the status of every other publisher or adaptation.
