NBC published the cold open on April 13 as “Trump Easter 2025 Cold Open.”
What happens in the cold open?
The scene begins with Jesus and his disciples in the middle of the biblical cleansing of the Temple. Trump then barges into the scene, interrupting the action. NBC’s official description identifies Day as Jesus and Johnson as Trump, with Kenan Thompson, Andrew Dismukes, Sarah Sherman, Ego Nwodim, Emil Wakim, Devon Walker, Michael Longfellow, and Jane Wickline playing disciples. NBC’s official SNL video presents the sketch as the episode’s Trump Easter cold open.

Peacock’s episode recap also identifies the sketch and places it in the Jon Hamm-hosted episode, describing Trump’s entrance during the temple cleansing. Peacock’s recap provides the episode context.
Why are tariffs and the markets part of an Easter sketch?
The sketch uses the biblical setting to satirize the political and economic headlines of that week. The Atlantic describes jokes about egg costs and stock-market volatility, while The Guardian situates the cold open amid Trump’s tariff news, including the announced pause in the tariff plan. These are descriptions of the sketch’s comic targets, not factual economic findings or an account of how tariffs affected prices or markets.

Easter imagery supplies the setting, while the references to tariffs and market uncertainty anchor the joke in April 2025’s news cycle.
How does it connect to SNL’s 2023 sketch?
The 2025 cold open recalls an April 2023 SNL Last Supper sketch, also featuring Day as Jesus and Johnson as Trump interrupting a biblical scene. The Los Angeles Times described the newer sketch as a callback to that earlier one. The two sketches share the interruption device, but the 2025 version shifts the setting to the cleansing of the Temple and directs its topical humor toward Easter-week tariff and market news.
