Taylor Swift was subpoenaed in May 2025 amid the legal dispute between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni over It Ends With Us, but the subpoena was withdrawn later that month. A separate effort to arrange a deposition was disputed in September 2025; the available reporting does not establish that Swift testified. Lively and Baldoni settled their main civil actions in May 2026, before trial.
Why was Taylor Swift subpoenaed?
The subpoena arose from the litigation surrounding the production of It Ends With Us. Reporting linked it to Baldoni’s claims that Swift and Ryan Reynolds had influence in discussions about the film. CBS News reported that Baldoni’s countersuit described messages in which Lively allegedly referred to the pair as her “dragons” and trusted partners. Those were allegations described in court filings, not established findings that Swift pressured anyone or exercised decision-making authority.

On May 9, 2025, Swift’s spokesperson confirmed to CBS News that she had been subpoenaed. The spokesperson said Swift’s only connection to the film was permitting use of her song “My Tears Ricochet,” and said she had not been on set or involved in casting, creative decisions, edits, or notes. These are the representative’s statements, not independent findings. CBS News reported the subpoena and the representative’s account.
Was Taylor Swift involved in It Ends With Us?
Swift’s representative described her involvement as licensing “My Tears Ricochet” for the film. The cited reporting does not establish that she worked on the production or participated in its creative decisions. Her name appeared in the legal dispute because of claims about her relationship with Lively and alleged influence in discussions—not because the reporting established a production role.

What happened to the subpoena, and did Swift have to testify?
The May 2025 subpoena was withdrawn
On May 22, 2025, ABC News reported that Swift was no longer facing the subpoena. A later ABC account attributed the withdrawal to the information sought having been obtained. The document subpoena and the later deposition dispute were separate developments. ABC News reported that the subpoena had been withdrawn; its later account described the withdrawal and the deposition dispute.
The proposed deposition was disputed
In September 2025, Baldoni’s legal team said Swift had agreed to appear for a deposition during the week of October 20. Swift’s lawyer, J. Douglas Baldridge, disputed that characterization, saying she “did not agree to a deposition.” He said her schedule could accommodate the time if she were compelled to appear and the parties resolved their disputes. Baldridge also said, “we have consistently maintained that my client has no material role in this action.” The reviewed reporting does not establish that a deposition took place. The Associated Press reported the conflicting accounts.

What happened in the Lively–Baldoni case?
From complaints to settlement
In December 2024, Lively filed a complaint with California’s Civil Rights Department alleging sexual harassment and retaliation connected with the film. She filed a federal lawsuit on December 31. Baldoni and related parties later brought a separate action that included defamation claims. These were claims and allegations, not findings that the alleged conduct occurred. The Associated Press summarized the litigation and settlement.
On May 4–7, 2026, the parties announced and filed a settlement of the main civil actions, avoiding a trial scheduled to begin May 18. The terms were not disclosed in AP’s report. In a joint statement reported by AP, Lively and Baldoni said: “It is our sincere hope that this brings closure and allows all involved to move forward constructively and in peace, including a respectful environment online.” The settlement ended the principal actions without a trial verdict on their claims.

A fee motion continued after settlement
The settlement left Lively’s motion for fees under California Civil Code Section 47.1 pending as a specific exception to dismissal of the actions, according to a June 12 court opinion. On August 26, 2026, U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman awarded Lively $363,245 in attorneys’ fees and $44,206 in costs—substantially less than the $8 million she had sought, according to AP. This was a later award of fees and costs, not a verdict on the underlying claims. AP reported the award.

A February 28, 2025 order in the Southern District of New York concerned subpoenas Lively sent to AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile for call and text logs associated with Wayfarer parties and related individuals. Lively narrowed the requests to non-content logs and removed location data; the judge granted the motion to quash in part and denied it in part. That dispute involved cellular providers and was not Swift’s subpoena. The court order addresses the provider subpoenas.
