Lauer denied assault and said their encounters were consensual. In 2026, Nevils published a memoir offering a fuller first-person account; it does not resolve the conflicting accounts as a court finding would.
Who is Brooke Nevils?
Nevils worked as a producer at NBC. Her account of an encounter with Lauer became public in 2019 through reporting on Ronan Farrow’s book Catch and Kill, when she was identified as the former employee whose complaint had led NBC to investigate Lauer. CBS News’ 2019 report and The Washington Post’s coverage described the allegation and the network’s response.
What did Nevils allege happened in Sochi?
Nevils said that during NBC’s coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, she went to Lauer’s hotel room after a night involving drinks. She alleged that she was too intoxicated to consent, declined anal sex, and that Lauer raped her. These are her reported allegations, not findings established at a trial. CBS News and the Los Angeles Times reported her account in 2019.
How did Matt Lauer respond?
Lauer denied raping or assaulting Nevils. In a 2019 letter, he called the encounters consensual and described their relationship as an “affair.” Nevils rejected that description. Their accounts conflict; neither his denial nor her allegation is a judicial determination. The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times reported the statements and Nevils’s response.

Nevils’s later account includes reflection on her reactions and conduct after the Sochi encounter. Those details are part of her account; later contact does not, by itself, establish consent or disprove her allegation.
What happened at NBC in 2017?
Nevils made a confidential complaint to NBC’s human-resources department in November 2017. NBC said it fired Lauer within 24 hours of learning of the complaint and characterized its decision as a response to inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace. The network called the conduct “appalling, horrific and reprehensible.” That was NBC’s explanation of an employment action, not a criminal charge or court ruling. CBS News and The Washington Post reported the complaint and firing.
What does Nevils’s 2026 memoir add?
Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Choose to Believe, published by Viking on February 3, 2026, is Nevils’s memoir and personal reflection on the experience, consent, power, trauma, and public assumptions about sexual assault. The publisher’s listing confirms the title and publication date. A 2026 Atlantic review and Guardian interview describe a fuller, more reflective account, including her efforts to understand her reactions. The memoir remains her account; it does not independently adjudicate what happened.
In an author’s note quoted by The Atlantic, Nevils writes: “My purpose here is not to demand that you believe my side of the story without question, but instead to ask that you question all sides of your own beliefs about sexual harassment and assault.”

Was Lauer charged or was the allegation decided in court?
The consulted 2026 Guardian report says no charges were brought. The available reporting cited here does not establish a court judgment resolving Nevils’s allegation. The public record described in these sources therefore consists of her allegations, Lauer’s denial, NBC’s employment response, and Nevils’s later memoir—not a criminal verdict.
