What do accounts say Elvis wore?
A 1997 Los Angeles Times article says that after recording “That’s All Right (Mama)” and beginning to tour the South in 1954, Elvis wore blue eyeshadow and mascara to accentuate his eyes. The article also reports that performance reporters noticed mascara running down his face as he perspired. It does not identify those reporters or cite their original accounts in that passage, so this is best treated as the newspaper’s retrospective report rather than a directly verified contemporary record.
How was makeup connected to his stage persona?
In a British Vogue interview about her costume work on the film Elvis, costume designer Catherine Martin said Presley “wasn’t scared of wearing eyeliner or dyeing his hair to create a stage persona.” Martin also contrasted that public image with the shy, sensitive person she described off stage.
