Spoiler warning: This ranking covers the complete Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga, including its final battles and outcomes. The manga is complete; VIZ identifies Volume 23 as the final volume.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni stands at the top of this peak-performance ranking, with Muzan Kibutsuji and Kokushibo next. The order below weighs demonstrated combat threat, abilities, durability, and the circumstances of major fights—not popularity, potential, or a made-up numerical power scale. The manga does not publish an official all-character ranking, so placements beyond the clearest top-tier anchors are reasoned judgments, especially where human fighters and demons cannot be compared in a simple one-on-one ladder.

How this ranking works

Each character is judged at their strongest demonstrated canon state. Tanjiro is ranked at his peak as a human, not by his brief demon transformation, which is not a stable combat form. Overall battle threat matters more than raw physical strength: demon regeneration, Blood Demon Arts, poison, tactics, matchup, and special victory conditions all affect a fight.

Upper Rank numbers provide a useful in-story reference among demons, but they do not automatically determine where a demon belongs relative to a Hashira. Team contributions also count, but a group victory is not treated as a solo win. For example, the confrontation with Kokushibo involves several elite slayers, and the final battle against Muzan is a race to hold out until sunrise.

The 20 strongest Demon Slayer characters, ranked

  1. Yoriichi Tsugikuni

Yoriichi is the series’ historical benchmark for combat ability and the clearest choice for the top spot. A recent manga-based tier list also places him above the field, though that list is an editorial assessment rather than an official score or ranking.

  2. Muzan Kibutsuji

The King of Demons is the final and most consequential demon threat. Defeating him is not a straightforward duel: the Corps must survive the battle until dawn. That combination of power, demonic durability, and the unusual win condition puts him just below Yoriichi.

  3. Kokushibo

VIZ describes Kokushibo as the most powerful of Muzan’s demons and the highest-ranking demon among his servants. His battle with Himejima, Sanemi, Tokito, and Genya shows both the scale of his threat and why his defeat cannot be described as a solo victory.

  4. Doma

As Upper Rank Two, Doma sits immediately below Kokushibo in the demons’ formal hierarchy. That makes him the strongest demon-side candidate after the top three here, though rank alone cannot settle how he would fare against a human fighter with a favorable matchup.

  5. Gyomei Himejima

Himejima is the strongest Hashira candidate in the ranking’s reference material and a central participant in the Kokushibo fight. His placement reflects his standing among the slayers and his endgame performance, not a claim that he beats every demon in a clean one-on-one contest.

  6. Akaza

Akaza is Upper Rank Three, below Doma by demon rank. He ranks just behind Himejima here as a judgment about peak human Hashira combat potential; the story does not establish that order through a direct duel between them.

  7. Sanemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi survives the Kokushibo confrontation alongside Himejima, but that feat belongs to a costly team battle. It demonstrates his endgame capability without making the encounter evidence of a solo victory over Upper Rank One.

  8. Tanjiro Kamado (peak human)

Tanjiro’s late-manga experience against Muzan earns him a high placement among the human fighters. This entry excludes his temporary demon transformation: the list compares stable combat peaks, not a brief state that does not represent his lasting fighting form.

  9. Giyu Tomioka

Giyu belongs among the strongest endgame Hashira, but his precise position relative to other elite slayers depends on how much weight is given to individual feats, teamwork, and matchup. Ninth is a close-call placement, not a settled canonical ordering.

  10. Obanai Iguro

Obanai’s endgame performance places him in the same crowded upper tier as Giyu and other leading Hashira. The manga does not give a universal measurement that cleanly separates these fighters, so this slot is an interpretive comparison of demonstrated contribution and combat threat.

  11. Muichiro Tokito

Tokito’s encounter with Kokushibo demonstrates his exceptional capability as well as the enormous gap between a Hashira and Upper Rank One. That distinction matters: a major contribution against a superior opponent is not equivalent to winning the matchup.

  12. Hantengu

Upper Rank Four, Hantengu is a powerful demon whose unusual abilities make a simple strength ladder misleading. His rank anchors him among the top demons, while the complexity of fighting him affects how his threat compares with individual Hashira.

  13. Mitsuri Kanroji

Mitsuri is a Hashira with a major Upper Rank battle to her credit. Her exact position against the other Hashira is provisional: the overall list weighs peak combat threat, but the available evidence does not establish a definitive head-to-head order.

  14. Gyokko

Upper Rank Five, Gyokko provides another useful demon-rank reference point. But the number does not translate directly into a human-versus-demon ranking; abilities and matchup can matter as much as formal standing.

  15. Gyutaro and Daki (paired)

They are ranked together because their Upper Rank Six threat and the conditions of their battle are linked. Treating either sibling as a self-contained entry would obscure the paired nature of the challenge and its victory condition.

  16. Kyojuro Rengoku

Rengoku is a formidable Hashira, but comparing his major Upper Rank battle with later fights involving marked Hashira requires care. This slot is a judgment across different circumstances, not a claim that one battle alone settles his place among every slayer.

  17. Tengen Uzui

Tengen combines physical ability and tactical skill. His demonstrated Upper Rank fight, however, unfolded under significant situational factors, which makes it difficult to use as a simple measure against other Hashira or demons.

  18. Kaigaku

Kaigaku becomes a newly ranked Upper Moon, but his demonstrated material is limited compared with the long-established Upper Ranks. His place reflects that formal status while accounting for the smaller body of evidence about his peak threat.

  19. Zenitsu Agatsuma

Zenitsu’s peak performance earns him a place on the list, but technique and specific matchup matter more than general potential. His position is a comparative judgment, not a universal claim about how he would fare against every character above him.

  20. Shinobu Kocho

Shinobu closes the list because a raw-strength ranking understates her actual danger. Her value includes poison and preparation, tools that can change a fight’s outcome; the final placement reflects overall battle threat rather than brute force alone.

Why the close calls are genuinely close

  • Demon rank is not a cross-faction score. Upper Rank numbers describe standing among demons, not a guaranteed result against a Hashira.
  • Group feats need group context. Kokushibo is confronted by multiple elite slayers, and his defeat comes at great cost; crediting the participants does not turn it into a series of solo wins.
  • Survival and regeneration are different. A slayer surviving an attack is not equivalent to a demon regenerating from it, so durability comparisons need to account for how each character recovers.
  • Matchups change the answer. Poison, unusual demon abilities, range, speed, and tactical preparation can make a lower-ranked character more dangerous in a particular fight.
  • Peak form needs a boundary. This list uses demonstrated peaks but excludes Tanjiro’s temporary demon form, avoiding a comparison built around a brief, non-stable transformation.

Where to read the manga endgame

VIZ’s synopses for Volume 20 and Volume 21 cover the Kokushibo confrontation; Volume 22 and Volume 23 cover the final conflict. VIZ also lists the series’ official catalog and the companion book Corps Records.
