Bonnier Norsk Forlag reported in August 2026 that Legendary bought the film rights for $3 million and that production is underway. Those are the publisher’s reported figures and status; no release date or film personnel have been confirmed in the sources cited here.
From Manacled to Alchemised
A fanfiction with a large online audience
SenLinYu wrote Manacled as a “Dramione” story—the fanfiction pairing of Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger—and drew inspiration from The Handmaid’s Tale. The Guardian reported in 2025 that it had attracted more than 20 million downloads during the pandemic-era growth of its readership (The Guardian, September 29, 2025). Bustle’s September 2025 account describes SenLinYu beginning to write on a phone Notes app, the story’s three-part structure and the role of fan illustrations and online sharing in bringing it to more readers (Bustle, September 4, 2025).
A substantial rewrite, not a renamed Harry Potter story
For publication, SenLinYu removed third-party intellectual property and rebuilt the story around a distinct setting and magic system, according to the Guardian. The published novel follows Helena Marino, a prisoner of war with missing memories, in a world shaped by necromancy and alchemy. War trauma and moral ambiguity are central to its framing. Readers do not need to know Harry Potter to follow the novel’s own characters and world.
Penguin Random House lists the US Del Rey hardcover as published September 23, 2025: 1,040 pages, ISBN 9780593972700. The publisher also lists ebook and audiobook-download editions (Penguin Random House book listing). Bustle reports that the publisher acquired the book in February 2024 for an undisclosed amount; that publishing transaction is separate from the later film-rights report.

What the reported $3 million film deal means
The figure comes from Bonnier Norsk Forlag, which said in an August 27, 2026 press release that Legendary bought the film rights for $3 million. The release also says production is officially underway (Bonnier Norsk Forlag, August 27, 2026). This is a publisher’s report, not a direct Legendary announcement located in the cited material.
The earlier Guardian coverage, published September 29, 2025, described a seven-figure, potentially record-breaking rights deal but did not give the $3 million figure in its accessible text (The Guardian, September 29, 2025). The available reporting does not establish whether $3 million is a purchase price, total rights consideration or another contractual measure. It also does not disclose payment structure or option terms.

Is the movie actually in production?
Bonnier’s August 2026 release says production is underway. The sources cited here do not provide a confirmed release date, director, cast, screenwriter, production schedule or theatrical or streaming destination. Without a direct studio announcement in those sources, those details remain unconfirmed.
How SenLinYu describes the story
The Guardian identifies SenLinYu with they/them pronouns. The author has resisted framing the book as a conventional romance or romantasy and said of its central relationship, “I was never wanting to write a relationship that was supposed to be aspirational.” That distinction matters when discussing an adaptation: reducing the novel to a fanfiction-to-romance-film story would leave out its war trauma and moral questions.

In a September 4, 2025 Bustle interview about the story’s unusual structure and reader reactions, SenLinYu said, “I had a really, really specific vision.” The book’s route from online fanfiction to a published novel and reported film-rights deal is a notable individual case, but the cited material does not establish a broader rate at which fanfiction becomes traditionally published or adapted.
