Lilly’s path moved from acting toward interior design; Charlie is identified as a producer and director. Here is what reliable biographical and family-profile sources establish about each of them.
Mary Steenburgen’s children and their family
Steenburgen married Malcolm McDowell on September 29, 1980, and they had two children, Lilly and Charlie. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas identifies Lilly as an actress and Charlie as a producer and director. The couple divorced in 1989. Steenburgen married Ted Danson on October 7, 1995, and Lilly’s Ojai Hub profile describes the close relationships among the blended family.
Steenburgen recalled Lilly’s name in a 1992 interview with RogerEbert.com: “Our first was named Lilly, with two l’s, because that’s all the better Malcolm could spell. It was supposed to be one l, I think.” The anecdote is her recollection of how the name was spelled, not a separate account from Lilly.

Lilly McDowell Walton: Ojai childhood and a change of direction
Lilly’s profile in Ojai Hub describes a childhood shaped by time outdoors in Ojai. She remembered the emphasis on outdoor education, including “Making pancakes from acorns, foraging, and camping trips.” These are her own recollections as reported in the local feature.
After attending Wesleyan University, Lilly studied acting in New York. The profile says she later concluded that acting was not the right fit: “It didn’t bring me joy.” She said she preferred structure and routine, and became interested in interior design after working at Rooms and Gardens.
