James Gunn has framed Superman (2025) as both an immigrant story connected to America and a plea for kindness across political differences. His explanation describes the meaning he intended; it does not require every viewer to interpret the film identically.
What is the political message of James Gunn’s Superman?
Gunn’s comments point to two connected ideas: Superman’s origin invites an immigrant-story reading, while the character’s response to hostility makes compassion the film’s moral test. In release-period coverage, Gunn described Superman’s story as an immigrant story and said the film’s meaning could land differently depending on the city or state. He defended its emphasis on human kindness rather than presenting one interpretation as obligatory. CBS News and TheWrap reported his remarks.
That distinction matters: a story can carry political resonance through its subject and setting even when its director describes the central lesson in broadly humane terms. Gunn’s account is evidence of his intent, not a ruling on what the film must mean to every audience.
Why did Gunn connect Superman with kindness across political divides?
Gunn made the point concrete by comparing Superman’s compassion for Lex Luthor—who wants to kill him—with the everyday choice to treat neighbors decently despite political disagreement. As CBS News reported Gunn saying: “No matter what our beliefs are, if Superman can show Lex Luthor kindness, the guy who wants nothing more than to kill him, why can’t we do it to a neighbor who has a different set of political beliefs than we do.”

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The example makes kindness an active response to antagonism, not a claim that conflict or disagreement disappears. Gunn has also described Superman as a good-natured character who wants to be kind, and said that seeing the world through his eyes makes everyone beautiful. The Associated Press reported his concern that people have become cynical and ironic, framing the film’s optimism as a deliberate alternative.
How do the immigrant-story and journalism themes fit together?
The immigrant-story framing gives the film a connection to America and to questions of belonging. Journalism adds a civic dimension: DC’s July 18, 2025 article says reporting and the process of journalism are at the heart of the movie. Gunn praised journalists who report what is rather than reshaping coverage to match what people want the truth to be. Read DC’s account of his comments on journalism.
