What are charcuterie chips?
Charcuterie chips are potato chips topped with small portions of ingredients you might serve on a cheeseboard—such as cheese, fruit, jam, pickles or cured meat. The chip acts as the crunchy base, so each bite can combine contrasting flavors without assembling a full board.
Dining and Cooking reports that the Today segment featured Jenna Bush Hager, Johansson and culinary producer Katie Stilo. The article does not give the broadcast date. It says Stilo credited cheeseboard enthusiast Marissa Mullen, known as @thatcheeseplate, for charcuterie-chip content; it does not say Johansson invented the idea. How to put together a charcuterie-chip platter
- Choose a base. Use ordinary potato chips, or choose a thick kettle-style chip if you want a sturdier, crunchier base.
- Set out small portions of toppings. Try fig jam and feta, or offer combinations such as prosciutto with fig jam and Parmigiano Reggiano, blue cheese with thin pear, or pickle with feta.
- Let guests assemble their own. Put the chips and toppings out separately so people can mix and match. Add toppings shortly before eating to keep the chips crisp.
Homemade chips are an optional variation; Dining and Cooking mentions an air fryer or microwave, but does not provide a complete formula, quantities, cooking time or temperature. Purchased chips are enough to make the appetizer.

Balance sweetness, savoriness and salt
For a sweet-savory bite, pair a little fig jam or fresh fruit with cheese. For a more savory bite, use pickle, cheese or cured meat. Because chips provide a salty base already, start with modest portions of salty toppings and adjust to taste.
The source cautions that cheese, pickles and cured meats can be relatively high in sodium, but provides no nutrition figures. To reduce reliance on those toppings, it suggests beans or hummus instead of cured meat, fresh fruit instead of pickled vegetables, or lower-sodium homemade pickled vegetables. Small amounts of flavorful cheese can add taste without making cheese the main topping.
