In the years after filming, Balch spoke about recovering from broken wrists, continuing therapy, traveling and leaning on friendships with fellow cast members. In May 2024, she said she and Shoykhet were still legally married and pursuing a divorce; that interview does not establish her legal status today.
Who were Emily Balch and Brennan Shoykhet on Season 17?
Season 17 was set in Denver, where the show matched Balch with Shoykhet. Netflix’s cast guide described Balch as an account executive at a tech company who had never been in a relationship before the experiment: Netflix’s Season 17 cast guide.
What happened to their marriage?
The relationship did not continue beyond the experiment. A January 2025 retrospective reported that both Balch and Shoykhet wanted a divorce on Decision Day: Showbiz Cheat Sheet’s January 25, 2025 follow-up.
In a May 29, 2024 interview with Westword, Balch said she and Shoykhet were not speaking directly and that further communication should go through their lawyers. She said she wanted a divorce rather than an annulment and confirmed they were still legally married at that time. This is a dated account of what she said in 2024, not confirmation of whether the divorce was later finalized: Hannah Metzger’s interview with Balch.

How did Balch describe life after filming?
Recovery, therapy and support
Balch told Westword that after filming she had surgery on both broken wrists and continued therapy. She also described losing friendships and setting boundaries with some family members, while finding support in friendships with her female castmates. She moved next door to castmate Becca, according to the interview.
Travel and a new dog
The May 2024 interview also reported that Balch had traveled and adopted a puppy. A January 2025 follow-up later described trips to Vietnam and Europe, time with former castmates, and her dog Lulu. That follow-up is a dated report based on social-media details, not a live account of her circumstances.

What did Balch say about the reunion controversy?
At the reunion, the show raised a kiss with an Australian man. Balch told Westword that Shoykhet had moved out and that they were on a “friend reset” at the time. She said she did not go home with the man and acknowledged the kiss as something she could take accountability for, while disputing Shoykhet’s account. These are Balch’s statements in the interview; the disagreement should not be treated as a settled account of events.
