The Kat—wrestler Stacy Carter—was released by WWF in 2001. The most consistent explanation in later accounts is friction with the creative team over assignments, but no definitive public WWE explanation is established here. Bruce Prichard and Jim Ross recalled creative-related concerns; Jerry Lawler’s interview from the time describes a more complicated story and says he did not know the final trigger.
Why was The Kat released?
The leading reported explanation is conflict over creative assignments, not a confirmed official WWE account. Bruce Prichard recalled that Carter pushed back on assignments and that the situation had become untenable. In a 2019 report about an episode of Something to Wrestle With, he said, “I think it was just push back coming from everything.” Wrestling Inc.’s report
Jim Ross offered a similar retrospective explanation in a 2021 account. He said writers had described Carter as difficult to work with, while adding that he had thought she was “a sweetheart.” Ross recalled Vince McMahon ordering her release that day. ITR Wrestling’s report
These are recollections by people describing what they understood about the decision; they are not a documented public statement from WWE establishing a definitive cause. The careful conclusion is that creative friction is the most consistently reported explanation, while the precise final trigger remains uncertain.

What did Jerry Lawler say at the time?
In an interview conducted on June 22, 2001, Lawler said the first explanation relayed to him was that someone in creative found Carter difficult to work with. He also said he later heard other possible contributing explanations, including concerns connected to a meeting with Hugh Hefner and his own advocacy for more television and storyline time for Carter. Lawler disputed parts of what he had been told and said he did not learn what finally prompted the decision. His account cautions against treating backstage explanations as settled fact. Why did Jerry Lawler leave WWF?
Lawler said he resigned after Carter’s release, describing his departure as a response to her firing. Prichard’s later recollection also has Lawler saying he would leave if Carter went. The accounts connect Lawler’s exit to the release, although they differ in how they describe the surrounding circumstances. Prichard’s recollection and Lawler’s 2001 interview

Her on-screen character belonged to WWF’s provocative presentation of the period
Miss Kitty and The Kat were character names used in WWF. Those on-screen roles should not be treated as evidence of Carter’s personal views or as proof of how she behaved backstage; the accounts of the release are separate, attributed recollections.
Her release was in 2001
The contemporary Lawler interview and later accounts place the release in 2001. They do not establish a precise release date, so a more exact date should not be assumed from these accounts.
