In Julia Quinn’s novels, Eloise Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington are close, longtime friends. Their easy familiarity is clear in Romancing Mister Bridgerton, where Eloise visits Penelope without being announced and is treated like part of the Featherington family. The television adaptation gives their friendship a more dramatic rupture; that conflict is not part of the book version described in the novels.
What their friendship is like in the novels
The clearest scene comes in Romancing Mister Bridgerton, the fourth novel. Penelope is reading in her room when Eloise bursts in without an announcement. The Featherington butler is so accustomed to Eloise’s visits that he treats her like a member of the household. Julia Quinn’s official excerpt makes the point through everyday familiarity rather than a formal declaration of friendship.
Penelope values Eloise as the close female friend she can tell almost anything. There is one important exception: she has not confided her feelings for Colin. That private affection sits alongside the friendship, giving Penelope something significant to keep to herself even with someone she trusts.
How the friendship continues in Eloise’s story
To Sir Phillip, With Love is the fifth novel and Eloise’s story. Quinn says it begins mere hours after Romancing Mister Bridgerton ends. Eloise’s view of Penelope is affectionate and perceptive: she knows Penelope is wonderful, kind, smart, and witty, even though the gentlemen of the ton have not recognized those qualities. The author’s official book page provides both the timing and Eloise’s assessment.

The novel’s main courtship plot is Eloise’s correspondence with Sir Phillip Crane after his wife’s death, followed by his invitation for Eloise to visit. The Library of Congress catalog dates the novel to 2003. Hachette UK’s listing for a particular paperback edition (ISBN 9780749936617) gives an on-sale date of 2 November 2006; that is the date for that edition, not the original publication year. Do Eloise and Penelope fall out in the books?
Not in the way they do on screen. TIME’s comparison of the novel and Netflix’s third season says the book version does not include the same friendship fight. It describes book Eloise as remaining Penelope’s best friend and as only mildly surprised when she learns Penelope is Lady Whistledown, then congratulating her. This is a secondary-source comparison, so it is best used to distinguish the adaptation rather than as a substitute for the novels. TIME’s book-versus-show comparison.
Rank #2
The distinction matters because the series rearranges and develops events for television. The evidence supports saying that the major friendship rupture and Eloise’s more searching response belong to the show’s version, not that every book and screen scene has a direct counterpart. Keep the two continuities separate when comparing their reactions to Penelope’s identity.

- Start with Romancing Mister Bridgerton (book four). It gives the most direct view of their closeness: Eloise’s unannounced visit, her ease in the Featherington home, and Penelope’s trust in her, tempered by the secret of her feelings for Colin. The Library of Congress dates this novel to 2002. Library of Congress catalog.
- Continue with To Sir Phillip, With Love (book five). It follows almost immediately in story time and centers Eloise, while showing how highly she thinks of Penelope. Julia Quinn’s book page.
Quinn’s official Bridgerton series page lists eight novels, set between 1813 and 1827, with one focused on each Bridgerton sibling. Lady Whistledown’s columns narrate the first four books; later second epilogues were collected in The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After. The two novels above are the most direct route for readers interested specifically in Eloise and Penelope.
