In 1 Samuel 25, Abigail is Nabal’s wife and the woman who intervenes to stop David from taking vengeance on Nabal’s household. After Nabal refuses provisions requested by David’s men and insults them, Abigail brings food to David and urges him not to shed blood. David accepts her intervention. The chapter later recounts Nabal’s death and David’s proposal to Abigail.
Who is Abigail in 1 Samuel 25?
The chapter introduces Abigail as the wife of Nabal, a wealthy man based in Carmel. The USCCB translation describes her as intelligent and beautiful; the New English Translation (NET) uses “wise and beautiful.” Those are the respective translations’ characterizations. The account presents her through her actions and speech, rather than as a modern biographical record.
Why does Abigail go to meet David?
During sheep-shearing, David’s men ask Nabal for provisions. They say they had protected Nabal’s shepherds, but Nabal refuses their request and insults David. A servant tells Abigail about the confrontation and warns her of the danger to the household.
Abigail gathers food and goes to meet David before his armed party reaches the household. She urges him not to retaliate in bloodshed. Her intervention addresses the immediate threat while also appealing to David’s judgment about the consequences of vengeance.

How does David respond to Abigail?
David accepts Abigail’s appeal and credits her with restraining him from taking vengeance himself. In the USCCB translation, he says: “Blessed be the LORD, who has defended my cause against the insult from Nabal, and who restrained his servant from doing evil, but has repaid Nabal for his evil deeds.” The statement is David’s, as represented in 1 Samuel 25:39.
What happens to Abigail after Nabal dies?
The chapter narrates Nabal’s death. David then sends a proposal to Abigail, and she becomes his wife. That is what the passage itself reports; claims about Abigail beyond its account should be distinguished from later tradition or interpretation.

How should readers understand Abigail’s story?
Abigail’s role in 1 Samuel 25 is clear within the narrative: she intervenes between David and Nabal’s household and persuades David not to take vengeance. The chapter is a biblical narrative, not a modern biography, and it does not settle every question about Abigail’s identity or place in the broader biblical tradition.
For close reading, compare the passage in a Bible edition containing 1 Samuel 25. The USCCB and NET translations, for example, differ in describing Abigail as “intelligent” or “wise,” while sharing the central sequence of events. A study guide to 1 Samuel can provide further context, but the passage itself contains the account summarized here.
