Conan O’Brien made his first physical return to The Tonight Show as a guest on April 9, 2024; he was later scheduled for a second post-exit visit in September 2026. The 2024 appearance came 14 years after he left the NBC program following a dispute over its airtime.
When did Conan O’Brien return to The Tonight Show?
O’Brien appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on April 9, 2024. The Associated Press described it as his return to the program 14 years after his departure, and LateNighter later characterized it as his first physical visit since his seven-month hosting run ended. He was there to promote his travel series Conan O’Brien Must Go, then associated with Max. (Associated Press) (LateNighter) (Associated Press)
Why did O’Brien leave The Tonight Show?
O’Brien’s departure in early 2010 followed a dispute over NBC’s proposed schedule. After about seven months with O’Brien hosting The Tonight Show, NBC planned to put Jay Leno back in the 11:35 p.m. slot and shift The Tonight Show to 12:05 a.m. The Associated Press connected the plan to ratings and affiliate concerns about The Jay Leno Show as a lead-in to local news; CBS’s contemporaneous account also described the proposed change. O’Brien rejected the move and left NBC under an exit arrangement. Calling the episode simply a firing misses the central point: it was a conflict over the program’s time slot that ended in his departure. (Associated Press) (CBS News / 60 Minutes)
In a statement quoted by the AP in 2024, O’Brien described his expectation for the transition: “It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule.” (Associated Press)
