For a first-time watch, the clearest order for Quentin Tarantino’s films is release order. It follows how audiences encountered them and avoids treating disputed story connections as a settled timeline. The list has ten theatrical entries because Kill Bill opened in two volumes; Tarantino counts those volumes as one film.
Quentin Tarantino movies in release order
These are the release years and titles in release order, with Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Kill Bill: Volume 2 listed separately as theatrical releases. The filmography dates are listed by the Quentin Tarantino Archives.
- Reservoir Dogs (1992)
- Pulp Fiction (1994)
- Jackie Brown (1997)
- Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)
- Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004)
- Death Proof (2007)
- Inglourious Basterds (2009)
- Django Unchained (2012)
- The Hateful Eight (2015)
- Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019)
Why there are ten entries but nine films
Tarantino treats Kill Bill as one film released in two theatrical volumes. Sony’s announcement for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood describes it as his ninth film, which fits that count even though the release-order list has ten entries. Sony Pictures’ film page also identifies the 2019 film’s Los Angeles setting as 1969.
Release order or chronological order?
| Viewing guide | What it prioritizes | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Release order | The sequence audiences first encountered the films, using documented release years. | Best default for a first watch; it does not claim that the stories happen in this sequence. |
| Story chronology | The fictional dates or eras in which events take place. | Only a partial, approximate guide is established; a complete, authoritative timeline for all the films is not. |
Some useful story-time anchors are Django Unchained, commonly set in 1858; Inglourious Basterds, set during World War II; and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, set in 1969. Those anchors do not establish a definitive order for every film. In particular, avoid treating placements for Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill as settled. Sony’s description confirms the 1969 setting of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, but not a full shared-universe chronology.

What the “Tarantino Universe” means
Tarantino has described two levels of connection among his films. In the commonly used shorthand, the “Realer Than Real” layer includes many crime and historical stories; another layer consists of movies that characters in that first layer might watch. A fictional movie can therefore belong to the broader conversation without its events literally sharing continuity with the crime stories. Popverse’s account of Tarantino’s 2016 explanation distinguishes this concept from later interpretations and Easter-egg readings, which are not all equally established.
That distinction matters when deciding what “in order” means: the films can share names, references, or a broad fictional framework without yielding one uncontested timeline. Treat explicit statements about the two layers differently from fan theories about exactly where every story fits.

How the settings relate to real places and memory
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
The film is set in Los Angeles in 1969 and follows TV actor Rick Dalton and his stunt double, Cliff Booth, according to Sony Pictures’ official film page. Tarantino told TIME in a July 22, 2019 interview that he was creating a Los Angeles of his memory: “In both cases I was creating a Los Angeles of my memory. In this movie, it was the Los Angeles of when I was 6 and 7.” The historical year is a frame for a deliberately remembered and fictionalized Hollywood, not a claim that the film is documentary history.
Jackie Brown
Jackie Brown adapts Elmore Leonard’s novel Rum Punch. Tarantino said in the same TIME interview that the book was set in Florida, while he moved the film’s setting to the South Bay, where he grew up. That adaptation choice connects the story to a specific place without making it a literal extension of his own life.

What order should you watch Tarantino movies in?
Start with the ten release-order entries above. If you have already seen them and want to think about story time, use only the clear era anchors as orientation rather than rearranging the whole filmography around an alleged definitive chronology. The available evidence supports release dates and selected settings more firmly than it supports a single complete in-universe sequence.
