Spoilers for Julia Quinn’s To Sir Phillip, With Love and the Season 4 finale of Netflix’s Bridgerton.
In the fifth Bridgerton novel, Eloise falls in love with Sir Phillip Crane after they begin corresponding; she visits him, becomes close to his twins, and eventually marries him. The show has not reached that resolution: as of the Season 4 finale, Eloise still says she is not ready to marry. Showrunner Jess Brownell has said the series intends to honor Eloise’s book love interest and ruled out Theo Sharpe as her endgame, but the adaptation’s timing and details remain open.
What happens to Eloise in the books?
Eloise’s story is told in Julia Quinn’s To Sir Phillip, With Love, the fifth novel in the Bridgerton series. Set in 1824, it begins after the death of Phillip’s wife, Marina. Eloise and Phillip correspond, and he invites her to visit so they can see whether they might suit one another.
Eloise arrives hoping to find a possible match, but Phillip is not the romantic ideal she had imagined: he is moody and rough-edged. Their relationship develops in the context of his family, too. Phillip is raising twins Amanda and Oliver and has struggled to be an engaged father after Marina’s death. Eloise becomes part of the children’s lives as she and Phillip grow closer.

The novel ends with Eloise and Phillip married and Phillip taking a more active role as a father. Its epilogues look ahead to their family life. Those ending details are recounted in SuperSummary’s plot summary; Quinn’s official page establishes the book’s premise but does not include the ending.
How does the show change Eloise’s romantic path?
The novel centers Eloise and Phillip’s correspondence and meeting. The television series spreads Eloise’s development across its ensemble story and seasons, giving her relationships and conflicts that are not part of the novel’s central romance.
Rank #2
- Theo Sharpe: In Season 2, Eloise forms a connection with Theo, a worker at a print shop. Showrunner Jess Brownell has said Theo is not Eloise’s endgame.
- Marriage: The series has repeatedly shown Eloise resisting the marriage mart. Netflix’s Season 4 Part 1 recap describes her calling herself “on the shelf”; its finale recap says she remains unready to marry.
- Hyacinth and Posy: In Season 4, Eloise is encouraged to spend time with Hyacinth. After John’s death, Eloise urges Hyacinth not to let fear keep her from love. She later advises Posy about approaching the marriage mart. Netflix presents these moments as signs of Eloise’s growth, even though she is not ready to marry herself.
What has the show confirmed about Phillip?
In an interview with TV Insider/Swooon, Brownell said: “I think we are interested in honoring the love interest from Eloise’s book. I can dispel, she’s not ending up with Theo. She’s ending up with the love interest from her book.” That is a statement of the adaptation’s intended romantic direction—not a confirmation of how or when the story will unfold onscreen.
As of the Season 4 finale, Eloise’s relationship with Phillip has not reached the book’s resolution. Brownell has not explained the adaptation’s plot mechanics or timing, and the interview does not confirm whether Chris Fulton will return as Phillip.

Where to read Eloise’s story
Look for To Sir Phillip, With Love, the fifth Bridgerton novel. Quinn’s official book page identifies it as Eloise’s story and includes ordering options. The series’ television version is a separate, still-developing path: it has signaled Phillip as the intended love interest, but has not yet shown the book’s courtship and ending.
