A 2006 National Press Club transcript describes her as part of Nick Jr.’s production and development team. At Nickelodeon, she oversaw production of Blue’s Clues and Little Bill before and alongside developing her own series idea, The Backyardigans.
Who created The Backyardigans, and what inspired it?
Burgess created the series around five animal friends—Pablo, Tyrone, Uniqua, Tasha and Austin—who turn their backyard into a setting for imagined adventures. Nickelodeon’s official series page describes the show’s central premise as five friends imagining adventures together.

The idea drew on Burgess’s own childhood play in Pittsburgh. Nickelodeon’s creator profile says she and her friends played hide-and-seek and pretended to sail ships or fend off lions in her backyard. NPR also reports that she loved adventure stories and genres, including Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Star Wars, Narnia, Oz and The Hardy Boys. She adapted that sense of peril and exploration for preschool viewers.
A musical adventure for preschoolers
Music and dance were central to the show’s format, not just background decoration. Nickelodeon’s creator profile quotes Burgess explaining the choice simply: “Why is Backyardigans a musical? Why not?” NPR credits choreographer Beth Bogush and composer Evan Lurie with helping shape the dance and music that gave the characters’ imagined journeys their distinctive theatrical quality.

When did The Backyardigans air?
Nickelodeon’s official series page lists the original run as October 11, 2004, through May 31, 2011, and gives the total as 77 episodes. This is the network’s published count and run, rather than a conflicting secondary episode tally.
What awards did the series win?
The Television Academy’s Janice Burgess biography says The Backyardigans won three Daytime Emmy Awards. PennLive’s 2024 obituary reports eight nominations and says Burgess won in 2008 for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program. The three wins and eight nominations are different measures; the sources do not present them as interchangeable totals.

Why Burgess’s work mattered
Burgess brought the scale and excitement of classic adventure stories into a child’s imaginative play space. The backyard setting made each journey accessible, while the musical structure let the characters move between ordinary play and grand imagined worlds. Her career also included behind-the-scenes work on influential preschool television, including Blue’s Clues and Little Bill.
Nickelodeon’s creator profile quotes Burgess saying, “To some extent, all the characters are kind of like me.” That personal connection helps explain how the series could combine a child’s make-believe with the sweeping adventures she herself loved.
