Some rebuilt followings on Instagram, YouTube or Indian short-video apps; others could not carry over the visibility, earnings or community they had developed. The impact was uneven, and the available reporting does not establish a reliable total for creators’ lost income.
What happened when India banned TikTok?
In June 2020, India banned TikTok alongside dozens of other Chinese apps. Contemporaneous coverage described the government’s stated concerns as security, sovereignty and data privacy. TikTok later said it had not shared Indian user information with foreign governments or used it in a way that compromised India’s integrity. Those are the government’s stated rationale and TikTok’s response, not an independently settled account of the underlying security claims. Al Jazeera’s July 2020 report and TikTok’s July 29, 2020 statement document those positions.
The shutdown was not simply the loss of an app. For creators whose audience and work depended on TikTok, it abruptly removed a place to publish, be discovered and attract commercial opportunities. A 2024 BBC Future retrospective reports that TikTok had 200 million users in India; that is the figure in that retrospective, not a directly comparable measure to every other audience estimate.
How did the ban affect creators’ earnings?
TikTok had helped some creators turn attention into brand work. Al Jazeera reported in July 2020 that cooking creator Geetha Sridhar had one million TikTok followers and earned an average of 50,000 rupees a month from companies promoting products in her videos. That is one reported creator’s experience at that time—not a typical income, an industry average or a calculation of what creators collectively lost.

The sources cited here do not establish a robust, independently verified aggregate total for creator earnings lost because of the ban. Individual accounts show what was at stake, but they cannot be added up into a sector-wide figure without comparable data on creators’ incomes before and after the shutdown. Al Jazeera’s account describes the livelihood shock; it does not supply such an aggregate.
Where did Indian TikTok creators and audiences go?
Users and creators moved to established platforms such as Instagram and YouTube. Indian short-video services including Moj, Chingari and MX TakaTak also sought to fill the gap. In later coverage, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels gained ground while many local alternatives struggled to match the reach and resources of larger companies. Moving platforms did not mean moving an audience intact. A creator might open a new account and post the same kind of videos, but that did not guarantee that former followers would find the account, that recommendation systems would surface the work, or that the new platform would offer the same commercial prospects. Some people rebuilt audiences and income; others did not recover their former reach or experience. The available reporting describes these varied outcomes, not a consistent platform-by-platform dataset that could rank creators’ chances of success.
Why did the move hit some creators harder?
Retrospective reporting describes Indian TikTok as unusually hyperlocal, including creators from smaller cities and regional-language communities. A platform’s value to those creators was not just its total user count: it was whether people who spoke their language or shared their local references could encounter their work and form a following. A transition to services with different audiences and discovery systems could not automatically preserve those connections. Academic discussion of influencer labour in India also points to precarity for socioeconomically marginalised creators who had found opportunity on the service. A sudden platform shutdown can therefore have unequal consequences: creators with other audiences or commercial channels may have more ways to adapt, while those whose visibility depended heavily on TikTok can face a sharper break. This does not mean that every creator was affected in the same way or that nobody recovered. The 2024 academic chapter on the regulation of influencer labour in India provides context for that vulnerability.

A following on one service can support income and recognition, yet creators do not control that service’s continued availability or discovery systems. India’s TikTok shutdown made that dependence visible in a single, abrupt rupture. It also showed why counting sign-ups on replacement apps is not enough to measure recovery: the relevant questions are whether an existing audience followed, whether new viewers could discover the creator, and whether attention could again support paid work.

The ban ended TikTok’s role in India, but it did not produce one shared outcome for the people who had used it professionally. Some carried their work elsewhere; others lost opportunities and a form of visibility that the replacements did not recreate. The reporting establishes that range of effects, not a single financial total or a universal story of either recovery or ruin.
