Lea Thompson met director Howard Deutch while making Some Kind of Wonderful. Thompson later described the 1987 film as “where I met my husband”; she and Deutch began dating only after production ended, then married in 1989.
The film that brought Thompson and Deutch together
Some Kind of Wonderful is a 1987 teen comedy-drama directed by Howard Deutch and produced by John Hughes, who also wrote the screenplay. Paramount lists Eric Stoltz as Keith, Mary Stuart Masterson as Watts, and Thompson as Amanda Jones. Its high-school love triangle follows Keith, Watts, and Amanda as they risk heartbreak in pursuit of love. Paramount’s film page lists the movie as PG-13 and 95 minutes.
Thompson’s own retrospective account makes the connection plain: she called the movie “where I met my husband” and said she felt blessed that it “brought me to Howard.” Deutch was not simply connected to the film after the fact: he directed it. Hughes was its writer and producer, as also reported in a contemporaneous Los Angeles Times profile of Thompson.
How Thompson came to play Amanda Jones
Thompson did not accept Amanda on the first offer. She recalled, “I had turned it down.” In a later interview, she explained that the offer came back after Howard the Duck was released, and she agreed to take the role the second time. Her account appears in a Paramount+ interview.

The casting history had more turns than a simple second invitation. The American Film Institute’s production history says Deutch had initially been attached to direct, was replaced by Martha Coolidge, and returned when Coolidge left the project. Coolidge had selected Kim Delaney for Amanda; Thompson replaced Delaney after Deutch returned. AFI’s account of the production notes also says Thompson and Deutch were already friendly, and that Deutch had long wanted to work with her. Actor Eric Stoltz suggested Thompson again and encouraged her to accept, making him part of the recasting story rather than its sole cause.
When their relationship began
Meeting during a film production did not mean they started dating while filming. Thompson said, “we didn’t start dating until after the show was over.” In a 2017 anniversary interview, Salon described the couple as beginning to date around the film’s premiere. The accounts support a broad sequence—meeting during production, dating after it—but do not establish an exact first date.

AFI records that they married in 1989. It also dates the start of shooting to August 11, 1986, in the Los Angeles area, and the film’s nationwide opening to February 27, 1987. Those dates help place the story: they met while making the movie, and the relationship began after filming rather than as an on-set romance.

Some Kind of Wonderful was the second collaboration between Hughes and Deutch, after Pretty in Pink, according to AFI. The film’s development and recasting explain why Thompson’s path to the role was not straightforward, while Deutch’s return to the director’s chair put him in the same production as an actor he already knew and hoped to work with.

At the time of the film’s release, Thompson also praised Hughes’s writing, saying, “He tells a simple story well and he’s really understanding about young women,” in the Los Angeles Times profile. The remark offers period context for the film’s story and its female characters; the personal connection in the headline, though, is the one Thompson herself tied directly to Deutch and the making of the movie.
